maybe I overlooked, but there's nothing mentioned about the car you drive, I'm guessing it's either RSX or EP3 since this is the forum for 'em...

Yeah what he said /\ plus which S/C you talking about? Im guessing Jackson Racing since they are the most popular. Also a good thing to tell us would be which motor you have too.

Dont even waste your time supercharging your car. If you want more power just get a turbo and you will easily be able to upgrade later on. I think most kits run 9lbs of boost.

Why? Any reasons you think its a waste? Its a pretty common knowledge around here that S/C and turbo are broken down like this:

Daily driver-S/C
Weekend car-Turbo

Jackson Racing and Comptech both posts dyno charts on their websites (including mods, if any). Alot of people go with a Hondata reflash or K-Pro. Just search around.

^Thanks cnyej1 , forgot about that.

Im saying this because most supercharged cars have 6+ cyclinders because they can afford to loose a little bit of power while gaining much more. But on a 4 cyclinder car it really limits your whp. You wont be able to put out much more than ~300whp with pretty much any supercharger available for a four cyclinder honda.

A turbo has wayyyyyyy more potential.

Also, think of it like this. While you are daily driving, you will constantly be boosting with a supercharger, wasting gas, and stressing your motor.

With a turbo, you can stay out of boost while daily driving and you will save more gas and the engine wont even be under stress, and when you feel the need for more power, just wind up the motor to around 3-4k rpm.

I wont argue about turbos having more potential for higher hp, but most people will be perfectly happy with the power a S/C puts out for their Honda. S/C are known to be easier to maintain, and better for daily driving.

I got better gas mileage in my 2 hondas when i S/C'd them.

Its also pretty common knowledge that a turbo cars motor is USUALLY, not always, but usually, under more stress than a S/C cars. Reason being because most of the time the car is equipped with a kit that has no power down low and then all of a sudden it just hits which is wayyyyy worse than having a fair amount of power gradually ie: a linear power curve.

I could stay out of boost with my S/C after I was up to speed. So your not always constantly boosting when your S/C'd.

Don't superchargers have a bypass valve that closes after 30% throttle?

Yeah I had some kind of valve but I never really looked into the exact working of it.

i would pick supercharged over turbo because turbo seems like more stress on the motor and yes it is true that you can make more power out of a turbo car but i think anything over 300whp in an RSX is just too much you will just spin tire like crazy you gotta think too the car with more HP isn't always the faster car traction plays a big part in a race

SCs generally have smoother powerbands than turbos too.

I was initially under the same impressions as Sir99 until I started doing an assload research that disproved alot supercharger myths. As much as I like to see the Skunk2 RSX running 9s as the track and 1600 hp TC (not a misprint, I seen it firsthand) screaming down the track, there really is such a thing as too much power for a DD.

Your right they are easier to maintain. I guess it comes down to preference.

what exactly makes a turbo "harder" to maintain? what does this maintence consist of?

Id love to have a turbo Honda, I just cant right now because I cant afford another car payment and headache. My EP3 is my daily driver.....

Whoa, Whoa!!! Hang on......YOUR WRONG, sorry to say it. The fact of the matter is a supercharger's output is directly proportional to the speed of the engine. If the engine spins at 4k, the SC only puts out as much boost as it's designed for at 4k, not max boost at any RPM........but I've been drinkin' a lil', so maybe I'm wrong?

No your kinda right. If your just cruising, you wont be in boost. You'll still be in vacuum. As you gas it harder is when you'll start to move on up into the boost range. Like I stated before I had no problems on my 2 prior S/C'd cars staying OUT of boost. I could cruise all day long and be constantly in Vacuum and not in boost.

SC's take power to make power, turbos feed off of wasted exhaust gases, if you have the means to maintain your engines maintenance go turbo.

Here is my input, coming from a turbo daily driver:

A supercharger is not always in boost. There is a bypass valve or butterfly valve that works off engine vacuum. When the car is at idle or part throttle the valve stays open bypassing boost. When vacumm decreases, i.e. more throttle is applied the valve closes and boost increase. Typically people can retain stock mileage depending on their driving style.

Now a supercharger has instantaneous response, no lag, but only makes moderate power on a 4 cylinder. Don't expect much over 300 without the addition of nitrous. HP varies w/ the size of pulleys that you use but on average most people are making anywhere from 230 at stock boost to low 300's at 11 PSI. I have only seen one supercharger setup w/ a built motor and that was because he was also using a dual stage nitrous system. There is no difference between the boost a supercharger creates and the boost a turbo creates. They both increase stress on internals but at 11 PSI and below you will not have any problems w/ proper tuning.

With that said a properly setup and tuned turbo system can be almost as reliable as a supercharger. But there are more things to worry about. Oil lines, overboost, excessive heat, drivetrain issues at high boost, etc. But properly setup and maintaned, there is nothing wrong w/ a turbo daily driver. I know hundreds of people that daily drive aftermarket turbo cars.

Now disadvantages of turbo cars is that there is going to be some lag which is largely dependant on the size of the turbo. As stated before, more things to keep an eye on. But the upgradability of a turbo system is endless. Switch manifolds, injectors, turbo, and power can be tremendous.

My advice to my customers is to pick a supercharger if you are not as mechanically inclined and don't want to upgrade to more power in the future. If you can handle a little maintanence and may want to upgrade in the future then turbo may be for you.
Thats all

Very well put. Your exactly right about no boost until you give it heavy throttle. Oh and my gas mileage went up on both of my S/C cars after the installation.

Turning it up the boost on a SC car is gonna be pulley swap (and a new belt is highly recommended).

With the upgrading of th pulley though, you'll need to get the car retuned ASAP.
