Default gas tank for mig welding?

Im looking to purchase a mig welder. After welding with flux core wire and gas Id prefer using gas much more, obviously, even though I would have to pay extra for a tank. However, would an empty propane tank, or helium tank also work. I have access to both, for free, and I know they may be more awkward to move but the money savings would really help me out right now.

Not the propane tank, but you might be able to use the helium tank. Also if you can't get the helium tank filled with mig mix, then you can usually trade them for a compatible tank.

if your talking about the ballon gas helium tanks that look like a propane NO and if you get a high pressure tank like an oxygen or something other than ar/co2 you will normally have to pay to have the tank tested as that is the law if you change the type of gas if it's an argon they can change it to a co2 no problem and there shouldn't be any extra charge for the change of use

An oxygen tank can only be filled with another gas if the valve is changed. It is against the law to fill an oxygen tank with any other gas. People have died because of this. That is why oxygen tanks have a different fitting.

Oxygen tanks have a 540 fitting. Nitrogen/Argon have a 580 fitting. Co2 has a 320 fitting.
