Default 2000 Prelude losing oil?

My 2000 Prelude with 100,000 miles is using a lot of oil. Just bought it and within 3000 miles the oil light blinked on. Upon checking the oil it was almost no oil. We added oil and it seems to be using it up fast. There are no leaks and the engine is spotless. Also, no smoke out of the exhaust although there is soot in the tail pipe. Any ideas?

sounds like the car was just low on oil. if its not leaking, or burning then there is no way for it to just leave. the soot is just fuel. all ludes do it. they al run rich. you will also notice it if you put exhaust on the car

Haha, if you say so... my car burns oil... but there are no visible leaks nor blue smoke other than when the engine starts up cold.

The soot is more likely from running rich. Preludes are known for burning oil, esp. when you hit vtec.

What exactly do you mean by fast? Fill it up to the second dot, and see how many miles it takes to lose a quart.

Also, use the search function (top right corner), you'll find tons of useful information.

mine also burns oil but only about 1/2 to 3/4 quart every 3000 miles that is not enought to warrant a low pressure light.

my 1999 Sh burns 1qrt oil about every 1k miles which is about normal especially if you are hitting vtec like a red headed step child.

no that sounds normal.
bought my lude like 4 months back.
had an oil change right before i purchased it.
my engine light went off a few weeks ago
cuz my engine wasn't getting enough oil pressure.

conclusion: ludes <3 oil. a lot.

this might be newbie question, but how much oil should a high mileage car on average burn? I have a 135k lude that burns a little less than a quart every 3,000 miles.

They don't all burn oil. Mine (JDM H22a) never burned a drop in 2 years.

Some might get **** about this but it's VTEC. I used to carry a quart of oil in my car, but I dont do it anymore becuase I check my oil very often and find that the bottle just fly/slides/clutters the car when I am driving.
