HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!......J/K .... .Just so your engine will run a little bit more cooler.What it does it allows the thermostat to open sooner to let more coolant flow through the engine than a stock one would.A stock thermostat has a higher thermal rating,therefore it holds back the coolant from flowing through till the engine gets hot enough,the mugen will open up sooner cuz it has a lower thermal rating on it.Hope this helps
my friend used the Spoon one and he said that's what happened. If he'd drive downhill at night the needle would start going cold on the watertemp. He'd also run rich at times. That's why I opted against getting another thermostat.
I just wanted to ask those that did get it, what their experience has been like?

Does anyone know the exact temperature for the Mugen one?
I'm about to replace the one I currently have installed. It says 78C on it, which is 172F.

EDIT: From kingmotorsports.com
"This thermostat has the operating temperature set lower than normal. It prevents engine power loss by minimizing rapid water-temperature rises under harsh conditions such as during circuit driving. The use of a flow-control-type valve prevents hunting, thereby achieving rapid stabilization of the water temperature (the engine warms up within a short period). Operating temperature: 68°C (STD.: 76~80°C) Full-throttle acceleration temperature: 81°C (STD.: 90°C)"
I don't really see the point in having it, besides the JDM factor. I'll keep my cheap OE thermostat
I think it was like $12 or something. Although I did by a box of HAMP oil filters

68C = 154F
Wow, that sounds pretty cold? No one has problems with it?

There is no reason to have one. It is a joke, especially for street cars.
It's amazing what people will buy just because of the name on it.

No problems. I've had the thermostat/fan switch combo for over 4 years with no issue. Mugen designed the thermostat to work within Honda's temperature range. It runs a little cooler on the streets and made a noticeable difference on the track; especially hot days. As mentioned, the biggest difference is at wide-open-throttle.

Other people might have their own reasons for using one.
For example, some people with a big turbo might switch to a half-size stock dual core del Sol Radiator so that they can fit everything. It might not cool down as well as a full-size Prelude radiator, hence there might be an advantage as to running this.
Another example for the Hybrid guys. Most of them run their stock single core Civic Radiators, and those thing run hot. They have a choice of either upgrading to a dual core radiator and a slim fan (which can be costly), or they might opt for the thermostat and switch combo, which is CHEAPER than the dual core + Slim Fan option.
It's not about name for me. Stock is 78C, or 172F. Find me one that opens somewhere between Mugen and stock, and I'll opt for that one. Mugen is 68C. If there's one that's inbetween like 74C, find me one that opens somewhere between Mugen and stock, and I'll opt for that one.

the purpose of the mugen thermostat is making the motor run cooler.. which tricks the ecu in adding more fuel... so your gonna be running rich... mugen intended the thermostat to be used with the mugen ecu... if you have the mugen ecu and thermostat.. you will notice a difference... mugen made the thermostat so you wouldnt have to change out injectors for more fuel... this is wut lawrence from Dynospotracing told me
