4 Door Accord - Speakers where the ain't supposed to be!
Hello everyone, recently I got this awesome idea, but I haven't been able to find any information on it, I'm almost sure someone would have thought of this idea before me. Who knows though most people are buying the two doors. Anyways, my car has 4 doors. I've got speakers in the front doors, speakers in the rear deck and subs in the trunk. I'm thinking about putting speakers in the rear doors! How about that, just thought I'd get some opinions before cutting my car apart. I haven't actually got to taking the door panel off yet, to measure and stuff, but soon. Any opinions? I'm set for as far as amps go, thats no prob, and I'm thinking Infinity Reference 6012i, 6.5" maybe drop down to 5.5" to save space. What do you all think?

I havent been in the US for some time but I am sure there are low profile speakers that will do the job.
Cool, yeah I suppose they'll have to be very low profile. Now that I think about it, those 6012i's are not low pro whatsoever. I may have to fund another Infinity Reference speaker. Do you think the 5.5" would be lower pro?

Definately going to do that before I start buying stuff. Reference speakers weren't on sale at BestBuy this week, so I'll have another week to check it out.

make sure you roll the window down first, that way you can see how low the track/window will drop.

I'm assuming that since the rear windows don't roll all the way down, I'll be okay. But you know what they say about assuming. In fact, I'm bored so I'm going to go check it out.
I just wired in the new amp today 4 channel. 2 for the back 2 for the new middles. It's a Blaupunkt, now instead of 22watts on the rear speakers, I'll have 30watts, not really a noticible boost in volume however, just a little more of a dent in the prexisting one. I still don't have my front speakers on an amp yet. There 6.5" Infinity Reference 6012i's, and I'm not sure if I want to amp them because they don't really handle bass all that well, so I'm a little afraid to amp them, they get a lighter drive from the 18watt internal amp. I appreciate the speedy responses and help I'm getting here. THANKS!

do you mean to say you want to add speakers to your back doors, or take out the rear decks and put some new ones in your doors, if this is the case, what do you plan to do to your rear deck?
you could fit a sub there and with the glass right above you'd get some pretty good sound if you have a nice setup.
anyone who has been in the back of a toyota avalon knows what im talking about

If I do a custom install of an American CD radio (military folks) into a JDM Toyota with live sound system, I have to buy an adaptor that could cost as much as $300. Some folks dont want to do a full system install to bypass the live sound system. It costs more to hook up to all these speakers and install crossovers too.
This is when the car didnt have a CD installed factory, older live systems can be adapted very easy with a normal adaptor harness from JDM main car harness to US headunit, but it needs to be extended out about a couple of feet. $15 adaptor turns into a $100 custom adaptor in a matter of minutes.

My plan is to leave the front door speakers, leave the rear deck, leave the subs in the trunk, but fabricate my rear door panels and add some speakers in them. Just for fun, and to have some extra speakers, more power, and because I'm bored, and when I'm bored I do stuff to my car. Last time I got bored I tinted the rear windows. All in all I'll have Front, Middle and Rear speakers, and then the subs. That's the plan, just adding two more speakers to the whole setup.
I have upgraded my 2 speakers on my front door to peak 270w and the 2 on the deck to peak 230w and also a 1500W Crunch amp with 1000w Infinity Perfect 12" sub... and I have to say....even if you add two speakers on your rear doors...you wont be able to hear it...because the deck speakers tends to project a lot more than the speakers down low...especially when you have upgraded your speakers with a sub in your system...wouldnt be worth the money, and if you use cheap speakers, it'll just decrease the value of you system...
The speakers I'm planning on using you can aim the tweeter. Or rotate it rather. It's more just something to do, and to give the people in back some nice full 360 degree sound. That, and I like to sit in the back seat and listen to music. I don't know, maybe it is a waste of money, but how many people have speakers in the rear doors of their older model Accords, I've looked and haven't seen any. It would be just something to do and it would look cool, you know?
By adding those speakers, you will improve the soundstage in the rear, but in return, you will mess up the front soundstage. If all you do is sit in the backseat and listen to music, go ahead and try it out. But if you're like me, someone who listens to the music while driving and cares about quality/soundstage, then I suggest that you dump all the rear speakers (except the sub), and get yourself some good front speakers.

How would that help? He already has subs in the trunk. The only thing it would help is to screw up the response flatness.

Just so you know, the power ratings of you amp are more strict than the power ratings of your deck. Let's just say both your deck and amp were rated at 25 watts per channel. Speakers hooked up to the amp will be louder and cleaner. Why? Amplifiers have to be rated with very minimal distortion, among other things, while CD players don't have the same strict rules when rating their power. (This is a very simplistic explanation.)
In my car, the rear speakers are all but turned off. The only reason I have any power going to them at all is for the rear passengers. (I always seem to have people in the back seat...) From the front seats, you would never know I even had rear speakers.

I always had an amp driving the rear deck, the old amp was 22 watts, the new is 30. Why would you want to get rid of the rear deck though?
Like 02 accord said, it's about quality and soundstage. Adding more speakers screws up the soundstage. Extra speakers in the rear doors will not add any quality to the sound, and in fact will probably reduce the overall quality.
You rear deck speakers are not sealed... they're "free air". Because of that, pressure waves from the subs will literally move the cones of the rear speakers. This distorts the sound from the rear speakers. The more bass you try to get out of your rear speakers, and the louder your subs are, the more apparent this distortion becomes.
A problem you'll have with trying to get more bass out of rear speakers, is that the lower frequencies coming from your subs and from your rear speakers will be out of phase with the other, and will start to cancel each other out. This causes some pitches to be louder than others, and in extreme cases it will give the bass note a "wavy" sound.
Tweeters... You only need 2, and they should be in the front. Too many tweeters, and in the wrong places, screws up the soundstage again, and really throws the balance off. One thing I hate is getting into someone's car who doesn't realize that they have too much highs... Coaxial rear speakers are okay though for most people.
Isn't your car supposed to be for you? Trust me when I say the rear passengers already have a full 360* of sound. Trust me when I tell you that adding speakers to the rear doors is really not going to improve anything. If you really want something to do, and since you haven't done it yet, go hook the front speakers up to the amp (finally). They're the most important speakers in the car.
And, I'm not trying to be rude at all, but... I don't really see how adding speakers to the rear doors would look cool.
A couple of general rules to remember:
Quantity doesn't equal quality.
Louder doesn't mean it's better.

I think if you want better sound quality, you should just amp your front and rear speakers. Overall your system will sound better, but you won't hear as much bass from the subs because the speakers will be pumping at about the same level.

This is not true. Adjusting the gains on the amp to the correct level prevents one set of speakers from overpowering the others.

It will only depend on the person doing the adjusting. If that person knows what he's doing, it will not depend on anything.
Look at me for instance. I'm running 6" speakers (40w rms) and tweeters (15w rms), both pairs are run off a 18 wrms/channel headunit. And in the trunk, I have a 1kw 15 inch sub. You can't even tell that the sub is there. So what you're trying to say is that my sub overpowers all my other speakers just because it's rated 14 times higher than all my other speakers combined ((18*4
72 watts vs 1kw)?

Yeah, I've got some time today, I'm feeling boredom set in, so I may just get crazy and amp some front speakers. Where would you recommend placing the amp though? If I mount it to the firewall, the people who are going to put in my alarm will probably be pissed because I took their spot. Maybe under the seat? I'll have to get some more 10 guage wire I guess and more speaker wire.
