i recently installed a tach and i hooked up the "light wire" to my dash light dimmer and it was working fine.. and now only the tach light works and not my dash lights

what year car? ex,dx what (trim)? what gauge? need all this info
have you tried rotating the dimmer to see what happens? i know on my car i have them hooked up so that i can turn my gauge light on and my dash lights off or vise verse. have you gone back and double... triple checked your wires?

maybe you blew the dimmer switch??? had the same problem...some how my switch blew and all my interiors died. just take your dimmer out and look at the chip inside to see if there are any burnt spots.
1994 dx.. aftermarket gauge since there wasnt one to begin with.. dimmer isnt working b/c the lights dont work.. the only lights in the dash that dont work tho are the basic speedometer, fuel, and temp everything else works... everthing worked after i installed the tach too but now all of a sudden its not

my tach light is connected to the dimmer and it works and so do all my interiors.. i already checked it.. i even unhooked the tach wire to see if it was interfering and it was the same

Chances are you fried the dimmer, as stated above. Your interior lights (dome light, courtesy lights, etc), but if your dash lighting is toast, then it's definitely your dimmer.

is that the actual dimmer switch itself that i would have to replace b/c the wiring behind it still works fine

well what kinda of tach are you using? if its a auto meter then you should of just ran the wires to fuses. first, fix the problem then replace it or else you'll just end up burning the new dimmer switch. also, did you check your fuses inside your car? that could just be it too.
