I'm new with bikes, how easy is it to change oil?
recently purchased a 91 zx 7 and an it's due for an oil change. How easy is it to chage oil? Sorry for the dumb question, im new at this and still learning the bike essentials...
buy the shop manual. It comes in handy for all sorts of things even if you never do other work, you can check the facts.
Usually the fairings dont need to come off, but taking them off can make getting the filter off easier. The time spent taking off fairings and putting them back on does not justify it on my bikes.
Esentials are a cap wrench to fit your filter, K&N makes a filter with a knut on the end which makes changing it a breeze.
Honda really seems to stress that the filter need to be torqued so a torque wrench is something to think about.
Latex or vinyl, disposable gloves are also great for keep the oil off your hands.
There is NO difference between bike and automobile motor oil. Get the oil that meets the specs from your manufacturer.
Put a few drops of oil on the gasget of the new filter before instalation so the filter will not get pinched and fail to seal.
Drain the oil with the warmed up and on level ground with the bike situated so the drain hole is as low as possible into a pan with a drain spout.
Drain the used oil from the drain pan back into the oil bottles and return them and the old filter for recycling.

thanks bro! I do every maintenance with my car. I was just a little cautious because I know nothing about bikes. But i did think that it would be fairly easy. thanks again!
you should be ok then, just make sure you go slow on the oil re-fill. Most bikes have an odd oil-change oil capacity as they are designed with oil retaining parts. (3.9 quarts and so on). Thats why the bike needs to be warm so every bit of oil that can come out will. On fill, you cal easily over do the last bit if not carefull or you dont use a pre-measured container.
That is all...

Yeah, that should be good. Don't waste your money on the 'motorcycle' oils, just use the same stuff you use in your car. If you change it often enough, youll be ok.
do you happen to know what motor oil i will need for my 91 kawasaki? since it's old, i would think a 10w-30.... any feedbacks?
I have since found that the friction eliminators in car oil will cause problems with a motorcycle wet clutch and make it slip possibly. Stick with cycle juice...10w40 weight is most commonly recomended, but chech with the owners manual...

There is a difference between cycle oils and car oils. It will definately make the clutch feel like its slipping.
but for the money get the mobil one motorcycle oil. I will run nothing but mobil one in my bikes/cars. Forget paying 7-10 bucks per quart for bel ray or honda, kawi, suzi, yami specific oem oils..........
