CRX Newbie - Ran out of gas, then won't start
K - just bought a CRX - not running from a kid who was getting rid of it. Just trying to get it up to running condition for now and then I can play with it later. This is for my g/f - she loves the CRX and wanted to start with a "beater" so to speak. Here's the stats on the car as I know them (forgive me, I'm normally a Nissan guy so I'll have to learn my way around Honda stuff):
1985 CRX. 5-spd, EW1 Engine (Carb)
Here's what apparently happened to the car:
Kid was driving down the road, ran out of gas. Car backfires then wouldn't start again. Has put a full tank of gas in the car, but still nothing. Tried to crank it, engine seems like it's starving for fuel, but not 100% sure (I'm about a beginner mechanic). Tried spraying a bit of starting fluid in the carb - no change. Going to trailer it to the mechanic possibly, but would like to know if any of you have any ideas. From what I've been reading (I did do a search), it could be the relay or the pump (I'd guess the pump since he ran it dry), but not sure if the backfire offers any clues or not. Any advice would be helpful here. Thanks.

can you verify fuel is getting delivered??? are the spark plugs wet after trying to start? can you hear the fuel pump at all when you put the key in to the ignition to on without starting it for 2 sec.?
also check the timing, when you run a motor dry, specificaly a carbed one, sometimes the resulting surge after fuel run out will put a strain on the timing belt from no fire due to no fuel and the rotation of the crank minus the powerstoke will jump the belt on the teeth in the head.
it happens. just my .02

K - I won't be able to get to the car until Fri or Sat, so I'll check a couple of those things and see what I find. How do you check the timimg on these cars ?
I have had this problem with my 86 Si thinkin I can make it to town and dont make it. Disconnect the battery, let sit fer a min. then try it again. When I bought my car the tank wasnt in it and I put it in, full tank of gas and it wouldnt start I tried spraying starter fluid in the intake still nothing. So I cranked till it went dead, charged the attery put it back in then, Bam it started first crank. Wish I knew why it does that.
