S2000 Steering Wheel in a 92-95 EG Civic?
Has anyone out there ever swapped an S2000 steering wheel in a 92-95 Civic? I have a 95 Civic EX coupe with SRS, horn, and cruise control. I need those steering wheel systems to work just as designed.
Here's what I think know so far:
1) The splines are different. The only 2 ways I know to get around this are to swap in a 96-00 EK steering column with the correct splines, or to cut the EK spline end off and have it machined and welded to my existing steering column.
2) I should be able to adapt the S2000 steering wheel wiring (cruise, horn, and SRS) to my existing wire harness coming up the steering column.
3) My original air bag is single stage and the S2000 air bag is dual stage.
4) Both air bags are 2 ohm impedance.
The $64K question is........if I am sucessful, will my current OEM SRS control unit have any electrical compatibility problems (voltage, impedance, etc.) with the different airbag causing either a premature or lack of deployment?
I have called dozens of dealers and Honda of America and it appears to be Top Secret information because of CYA issues. I am convinced if done correctly, that this will be just as safe as the current OEM design in the EG Civic.

Only '06+ S2000 airbags are dual-stage/threshold. '00-05 S2000 airbags are single-stage.

The S2000 wheel I have is the '00-'03 version. I need verification from you that it is indeed single stage. Even so, will there be electrical compatibility with my '95 Civic SRS control module?

This is a tough one. Based on my electrical experience I would say yes as long as the following conditions apply:
1. It is rewired correctly
2. The functionality is all the same (single stage airbags are really just 3 wires and should in theory function the same)
I would suggest finding a copy of the factory service manual for the S2K you have the wheel from and the one for you car, do a little studying on the SRS system in both manuals. Really all the airbags wires are is one to show the SRS control module the airbag is present and isn't blown and the other two are for deployment of the airbag in case of an accident. Dual stage might be different, I haven't done too much research on the actual electronic funtioning of that system. Or it could be the same as the single stage with different voltage signals to notify the airbag the grade of the crash. You just have to do some more detailed research.
Just a suggestion, take the airbags off both wheels and cut the spline off your OE wheel and weld it to the S2K wheel, that way you wont have to buy any new column. Good luck and keep us posted on how the project goes.
