Wiring battery straight to head unit.
Hey guys,
First off, id like to say nice to meet you guys, as this is my first post at this forum. This forum has helped me losts with my Civic.
Well heres my question. I have a 96 Civic EX Coupe, and i have a JVC Headunit. I've contacted JVC because whenever bass hits i seem to loose power to my speakers for a split second, sounds like the cd is skipping. JVC said that i have to wire a power line directly from the battery to the head unit, could anyone tell me how to do this, what wires i need, etc. Thanks much

Edit: Sorry for posting in the wrong part of the forum, i posted a new one in the audio section.

I am assuming you have subs. Why not just get a cap? Right now I am running a couple subs and my 6x9's off of my (approx. 80 watt/channel rms) 4 channel Rockford amp, and I don't have any problems (no cap, stock battery). I know I shouldn't be running subs off of my 4-channel, but I don't feel like getting a separate amp at this time, and it sounds fine for now. Just from my 650 watt 4 channel, my sound never goes out.
When I do get new subs and an amp, I will surely get a cap. I don't know why you don't just do this.

newer cars (like yours) have two power wires and one ground wire to the head unit. the generic colors are yellow, red and black. black, is ground. red, is ACC+ and then yellow is CONSTANT+. what that means is, you should always have yellow going to constant power. on a normal radio harness, it will be fused and go through a lot of wiring and mess in order to get to its power source. what JVC is recommending is for you to take this yellow wire and find a direct route to your positive terminal on the battery, so that when it requests power it won't clip out or anything. the red will be your acc+ or wired normally, to the ignition switch so you don't have to turn off your radio manually, like in many older volkswagens, for example. leave that one alone. the only wire to modify is your yellow, constant power wire to a +12v source (positive battery terminal). i have a clarion high power head unit and i'm not having this issue, perhaps you might want to switch headunits?
Your on the right track here. On every stereo I have ever installed I always run a direct power wire to the deck from the battery and it ALWAYS sounds better. Its fairly simple. Go to the auto parts store and get some 12-14 awg wire and some butt connectors and a connector with a hole to hook the wire to the battery and an inline fuse with a 10-15 amp fuse. I ran the wire through on the drivers side through one of the little blank plastic holes in the firewall to the right of the peddles. then just run the wire to the the battery and put the inline fuse on the wire near where the battery is. then route the wire through the dash to the deck and connect it to the yellow wire on the back of the deck. Also I recommend running a ground wire too and just ground it on the metal part near the deck and connect it to the black wire on the back of the deck.
I guarantee if you do this it will sound better. Like I said every car I have done this to sounds better cause the deck gets full juice and it can put out its maxamum power to the speakers effectively.
