Bought a 4dr. What motor is this?
Picked up a stock 4dr for my next project down in the Bay Area with a rebuilt motor. I don't know much about EFs, my last project was an eg hatch, but i'm pretty sure the stock motor is a d16a or d15a? I'm probably wrong.
Anyways, I was wondering if this is possibly the same type of stock motor that comes in 88-91 4dr's or if it's something else. The motor is stamped d15b.

But it looks and should be a d15b2.

Let me start by rephrasing to clarify. I'm familiar with US d15b2's and b7's and JDM d15b's. That's why I made this thread.
The car is a 1990 4dr LX. The engine stamp ONLY says D15B, I looked very carefully just incase it was just hard to see but there is no 2. The serial number underneath the engine code reads 22(S or 6)6156. Maybe this will help decipher this mystery.

hmm I've heard 2nd handly, that some of the b2s b7s over in japan are just stamped B like in the other motors.
So maybe it is just that.

so it's identicle to the 91hp (i think?) US d15b2 just the jdm version?

should be.
I believe most of those japanese versions come carbed, and a lot of places install them as "replacement" motors by swapping over the USDM IM/Injection setup.

Awesome thanks for the clarification
Was just a bit confused because my last car had the 92-95 jdm d15b and I had no clue they made em for the DPFI ef models, but I guess that would make sense though. Thanks again!

Eh, i'm not too worried about it. I have a DD already, this is just a project car, it's hibernating till the end of the year then i'm swapping a B in it. Appreciate the advice though.

You cannot directly compare octane ratings between Japan and the US, because they use different rating scales (RON vs. PON).
92 RON in Japan is roughly equivalent to 89 (R+M)/2 in the US.
