Default i think i busted up my shift cable

ok so i was attempting to try the full throttle shifting tonight and it didnt go so well. I've never liked doing it, because it just feels like so much stress is being put on the tranny. Anyway, i do it and 1st to 2nd goes in fine, then i shift into 3rd and let go of the clutch and it just hits the limiter.

the 1st, 3rd and 5th gear upshift feel like putty; 2nd and 4th are normal. No noises from the tranny at all and when i get it into gear for an upshift, everything is normal. You know how you can "feel" the synchro's? Well i dont feel them at all. I cant feel it go into gear. It's likely just the cable, but i wanted to confirm to see if this sounds like a cable problem to everyone else.

i'm pretty sure they aren't the same (different shift mechanisms)

might i suggest just buying oem spec (maybe not official honda) but something similar?

i'm sure import replacement parts might have it (prelude sponsor at another board)

Oh man, that EXACT same thing happened to me a few years ago. Definitely sounds like a stretched cable if it feels mushy/putty (perfect description) then that's what it is. Now if it ever feels just completely loose you may have snapped a cotter pin where the cable connects to the shifter. That happened to me once, and it was an easy fix.

anyone know for sure if the shift cable assembly from an accord will work on my car?

this is the reply i got from the guy on ebay:

Hello,
we got these which I believe are the same but if not we have another one off a 95 honda accord which should be auctioned by early next week.
thanks

I don't think (just by logic) that the 88 cables will be the same, but the accord may be. Did you check part numbers? How about Hollander Interchange?

Make sure you didnt just pop off one of the large clips that secures the linkage up by where it connects to the transmission first before you go replacing the cables.

If you have time, take off the intake tubing and follow the cables back from the transmission with your hand. Right where they turn to head back to the shift lever, I bet the plastic covering is cracked.
