Default ZC Head / D16A6 Block - Rebuild done

Well I finally got my ride back tonite, and I'm pretty happy.

I had recently blown my headgasket and warped the head. so I picked up a complete ZC SOHC from H motors Online and dropped it and the car off at my mechanics shop.

He inspected, cleaned and swapped the ZC head over to my A6 block, as well as replacing the water pump, timing belt, head gasket, new piston rings, honed the cylinders, and cleaned and inspected the pistons. He even threw in my DC header I had sitting waiting.

Car runs good, power feels bumped a bit and I am happy.

Now you may ask why I went through all the trouble of swapping the head and not just dropping in the entire engine?

Well it's a CA car, and I have to be careful as the ZC stamp on the block, if noticed by a smog tech that knows what's up, could fail my car, do not pass go. So with additional info from Tyson (he told me most of the difference in engines is mostly the cam), I figured the easy thing to do was swap the head and that way my block numbers still match and I no longer have a invalid block stamp code.

Plus now I have a spare bottom end and a head that needs some machine work. So i can play around with it and maybe build that motor up.

Cheers!

it works with a sohc zc block, some dumb ricer in town has it done, i hate him, but my calculations awhile ago i did on the net, it said compression would be upwards of 12:1 so let me know how it goes, and damn CA must suck, emissions sounds horrible, i heard no one can have b20's cuze its a suv motor, lol in montana u run open header and slicks and u don't break the law, yes slicks are legal in montana, and do i don't run them driving around here gl with build man

From what everyone has told me yes, the ZC cam will drop right into the A6 head. As far as the ecu, I'm still running the stock A6 ECU, but I need to do some research to see if i need to upgrade the ECu to get the max performance from the cam with better maps.

i know on the DOHC ZC if you run the DA teg ECU it's supposed to help. But for now, it's working just fine.

And yeah, CA emissions laws suck. But I may be moving to TX in a year, and their laws are a little less stringent, so I may build the ZC later for TX or go B20. We'll have to see, but I'm happy so far. My mechanic only charged me $900 for everything.

Maybe someone can chime in on the ECU info and enlighten us.

u shoulda done the work yourself, i paid less than 200 for parts including the a6 head and im good the zc czm will fit in the a6 head as far as i know, once i get everything tuned 100% with the vtech im putin the cam from my zc in my new a6, i have a few electrical problems im sorting through, but deffinetely worth savin 700 to do it urself, the zc cam should make the vtech hit real hard, good luck bud

and the zc cam will not fit into a vtec head. and for the record, a6=non vtec zc=non vtec. The only vtec heads good for the mini me are the z6 and y8 heads.

Mine was a ZC non VTEC. I had to pay a mechanic to get it done since i was going to Hawaii that week and when i got back i would need the car for work.

Otherwise I would have done a simple Z6 head swap, or a complete b18a/b swap.

Just didnt have time.

Either way, I'm still happy, car pulls hard and is very good on the freeway.

What the FAWK!?!?

Not upset with any of you guys, but since I had the engine rebuilt it has been running great. Then just last nite my alternator died completely, and i think that's okay, cause I had another one left over from the ZC I picked up from H Motors.

But now this morning, my car started overheating. ??!? WTF?!?!?

I had a complete SOHC ZC and PM7 ECU in my old 91 EX, passed visual (even with an old no-name intake) and sniffer with not even a raised eyebrow from the tech. Mind you, this was about 5 years ago, maybe I just got lucky?

for the right price on parts its def. worth it. The compression will be higher so nitrous will like you. and if its timed right you will get more than 8-13. dont know where you came up with those numbers. More like 15-30.

Wow this is going downhill...lol, j/p

Well last nite I was driving home from work on just a fully charged battery, and the car started dying, and the car overheating...leaving me stranded on Moorpark and Coldwater Canyon. I had to call AAA and get a tow.

Well I got the alternator replaced and so that's all good, but it turned out my radiator was cracked and that's why it overheated.

getting that replaced monday.

So far the tally for those keeping track -

$800 for rebuild
$400 JDM SOHC ZC (Non-VTEC)
$71 AAA membership renewal (cause it was just expired when I called for the tow)
$54 Miles over free towing
$120 Alternator
$100? or so for the radiator

$1545 Total

So hopefully, this will be the last unexpected cost...
