Default K-R or C-R in my EF?

Hey H-T:

I need some real technical help and suggestions here; I’m not looking for new novice advice but detailed information from experience. I wish to perform a motor swap on my 91 EF hatch DX.

Now the ONLY 2 motors I wish to use are either a B-series (ITR) or K Series (ITR). Can someone please give me some insight, costs to install overall power etc? I also wish to remain naturally aspirated.

So far the one thing that turns me on with the K series is the 6 speed transmission with LSD however I do not like the mounting area I've seen of the gear box (through the dash like EP’s)

Team I need advice!!!

The K swap doesnt put the shifter on the dash like an EP3, it mounts in its normal location. And if you have the bucks the K is where its at.

If you have the cash and resources, K-series all the way. And there is a way to custom-mount the gear box underneath the floor between the front seats. There are a few K-series project threads floating around this forum, contact those guys for advice and price info. Best of luck to you, post pics!

Someone would have not asked that question had then known, or even had they not know and just searched the pros and cons of both.

If you don't care enough to spend more then 15 seconds searching on Honda tech how are we to belive you are honestly going to rip out a motor rewire mount etc and stick a new motor in?

I say keep your D series and search or you'll end not knowing what you are doing or make a wrong choice.

I read the threads I want MORE info, its a lot of money I'lll be dishing out and I WANT TO BE CERTAIN. Sidenote I'm not doing the swap, I'd rather have someone with the proper skill set in mind do it correctly (family member)..

Thanks for all the replies guys... I'm going to price the motor(s) out Wednesday...

same.

i suggest doing what you want. they're both pretty pricey. but im sure you could have a B series R motor installed for about half what the K series R motor would cost.

dont get me wrong, if i had the cash... i'd drop a K in there too.

There is more info on these 2 motors on this site then probbly the rest of the damn internet.

You are either just dreaming or showing off, or maybe you really are that inept, in that case I'm sorry for you. I'll keep saying stick to your D then.

How much more info can you want, everything from the part #s casting dates, displacment piston sizes cam specs gas milage wiring etc. It's all here.

You just didn't search, or bother to spend anytime at this. So you won't even bother wrenching your self, thats fine you'll end up with a nice car and know nothing about it or why its good other then "Mad pplz on HT said it be HOT" That means nothing I asure you.

They are so wildly differnt, and will end up being such differnt cars I restate my urge of you to unlazy and search there is no way the info you are asking for isn't out on this site.

No matter what you'll do you'll be happy, so just stuff what ever in because you wouldn't know why they are different anyway.

I'm aware there is a lot of information on this site casting etc which in my situation is of no real relevance to me? That being said I’m simply asking BETWEEN the TWO what are the pro and cons?

I apologize maybe I should have stressed this earlier. Regarding not wrenching myself and being “lazy” that’s quite the obtuse comment to make, I’d rather HELP a seasoned technician install the motor rather then attempting it myself incorrectly

I’m curious on how and why the cars would be different, how are they on long trips daily driving, emission tests etc. Regarding the bench racer comment you don’t know me so please keep those comments to your self. Regading the ganster lingo I speak english no retard, we deal with this enough driving Hondas we don't need it here too.

I appreciate all your help to this post and others but, criticize ideas not people.

Sorry if this caused a toss up

P.S Super man would kick both your ***'

I've pretty much laid out the majpr pros and cons here:

B18c-R
Pros:Cheaper than a K20
Cons:Slower than a K20

K20R
Pros:Better in all ways than a B18c-R
Cons:More expensive than a B18c-R

Yeah this guy needed a whole thread to figure out what should have taken him 60 seconds on the search bar.

"Which motor should I swap, the best possible swap for my car, or an older b-series?"

Allright I think I might have some useful info to add to this otherwise flamefest of a thread.

I was at one point in time pondering the same thing. He is what I did:

I wanted around 220whp, so I made a spreadsheet comparing the 2 builds, I compared a B built to a 2 liter, with cams headwork sleaves ect. all done right. Astonishinly it was about the same kind of money either way, give or take $1,000. So I went with a K20A type-r swap, bone stock with IHE and K pro, 221hwp 156ft. lbs. Stock reliability, and runs like a raped ape. Actually I just got back from a trip to Canada in it, with no problems at all. Now I have a great baseline to start from if I need more power, whereas with the 2liter B build I was going to do, would be pretty much maxxed out, for street trim that is. IMO there is no question I made the right decision, it has tons of torque, tons of power, and is stone stock. Check my build thread in my sig, I have lots of pics, info, and 2 videos in there. Hopefully it will be of some help. If you decide to go K feel free to IM me, I would be more than happy to help you out.

Edit: Oh yeah the EP3 shifter is not required thats the way I did mine for I love the EP3 shifter. Conventional shifting is easily done with RSX parts. I find the dash shifter an awesome addition, plus now I mounted my Odessy battery where the old shifter was under my custom console. Saves weight from all the wiring I had in my trunk.
