never mind my 2001 civic
okay i posted alot of questions .. but i have rethought it and considering my favorite car of all time in mid price range (The one and only) TOYOTA SUPRA is making a come back in 2008, i am going to save up my money and buy that instead of spending on the civic. I mean from realistic perspective i'ld rather tune a car with a good engine to start with than work on one with a engine, as in the words of some of the fellas on this from, that "sucks".
I still love my civic but i think i'll just leave it to what honda designed it for. Economic and transportation (again quoting somebody on the form ... forgot who :-))
Thanks for all the help everyone .. but this isn't good bye ;-)

This is just a guess but with the new skyline coming out in 2007 and having a price tag of close to 80 grand i am pretty sure the supra will also be very pricy no cheraper then 600 grand i am guessing.

Based on what I've seen, it wouldn't be worth 6 grand, in my opinion. It looks awful, and a V-10? Why don't we just lose all of the respect for the I-6 Twin Turbo's that outperformed the V-series engines.... (In case I'm not being frank enough, I hate USDM V-series engines.)

Buying a car that's already fast, is no fun for a tuner.
Getting a car with a small engine and making it faster than a 60k car by personaly tuning it, is an accomplisment.
But to each it's own!
Good luck

i've been in this "scene" for a long time, when i see threads like these. i never take them seriously because most (99%) of the kids who make these threads don't even know wtf they're saying. in 2008, when and if it comes out, instead of owning the new supra, they'll be in a ford focus and say they rather have a house then a 80k car.

I dunno about the new supra being too affordable for the entry crowd... And I do agree that 99% of these threads are BSing from armchair race boys.
However, I do have to say that a true sports car with a racing pedigree is worlds above our civics. I dropped $$$ for 3 years into my civic to build a k20 powered track car, and I have to say, it's bloody quick. K20a2 with Toda goodies, race valved koni's & GC's, swaybars, caged, stripped, type-r alum LCA's, assorted poly bushings, solid upper mounts, solid bushings where possible etc... I love the car.
But then I finished college and got a real job I bought my first performance car, an Evo9. It's still dead stock save for new wheels and tires. All those engineering shortcuts and compramises that were made by honda engineers in my civic just arn't there on the Evo. On track the cars are almost dead even with the civic coming out on top by just a smidge. Difference is that there's AC in the evo, it doesn't shake and rattle, try to kill you every time you drive it in the rain, there's more than one seat, it's completely street legal etc etc...
In conclusion, I love my civic but a real sports car with racing pedigree > tuner car. God help the civic should I ever decide to modify the Evo.

I agree 100%, i think the funniest thing ive ever seen.. Was riding in my friends 1989 EF hatch, with a b18c1 + 12psi. ran 11.9's, we were on the highway next to some old man in his 911 Turbo, the old man laughed at us, then punched it. My friend slowly accelerated beside it, then PUNCHED it spinning the tires at 100km/h, and just destroyed it.
*but street racing is bad:p*

thank you for taking your time to compare cars in TWO completely different classes.
civic = 5k
evo = 30k
having a 5k civic catch up to your 30k evo = priceless.

My civic ran me about 15k new, add up all the parts that went into it not including my labor and it's actually a bit more expensive than the EVO.
Besides, I didn't build some cheapo boosted drag car. I'm comparing my built race car that's safe as I can make it and damn near bullet proof to my evo. In that comparison they are very even in ON TRACK performance (one of those tracks with left and right turns).
I doubt one could put together a civic for 5k that is as fast as an evo on track. Well, maybe with alot of freebies. It could probly be done for a drag car, but that really defeats the purpose of having an all round performance car.

To me, that's about as close as a statement could be, to describe why I have a Civic. I could have bought an Evo. or something with nicer hp numbers, but I chose the Civic because I've always wanted to push it up in the performance bracket. But, as always, to each his own.

Toyotas are girly to me anyway a supra for as much as it cost all u will afford to do is put gas in it and u havent thought about insurance. Dude get ur head out the clouds but whatever I love my julian (civic) always and affordable. Just remember when u break something on that supra you are screwed but us hondas wont be screwed like you.
okay first of all wow ... i didn't get a chance to come back for a few days but soo many responses. Okay let me start with last ones first and down the line:
Tiauna: supra's are not girly ... if you drove one you would know.
sdcivic549: you are right: a car that comes with a factory turbo or performance enhanced just feels a better choice than "tunning" a low power car. But that is what tunning is about. The satisfaction when a BMW m5 driver is looking at you 'cuz you smoked him in your sti. But i'ld rather be a armchair race "boy" than die while street racing. Last month i had a friend who died while he was racing on his bike with another guy. Hit a taxi cab head on ... dead on the spot. so ... i am not offended for being safe.
fventura03: okay first lets get one thing straight: i am not a kid. I have a daughter and family obligations. And secondly its the post from many users on this form that have detered me from doing anything to my civic ... i mean pretty much everyone told me the d17 "sucks".
Toyomatt84: i agree that there is more satisfaction in turning a daily commuter car into a racing monster ... but really unless you spend money on swapping the engine, installing a turbo, getting noss and all the other goodies your car will cost you more if not less than a evo9.
B18a_CRX: Couldn't agree more dude. It is much more fun to smoke a ignorant fool 'cuz he is riding in a 911 turbo with your hatch. No argument to that what so ever.
InanimateCarbonRod: a k20a engine costs about 5500. Installation, buying transmission and upgrading parts will cost you more than buying a new car. I mean just a intake for a k20a is more than 250; new that is. My civic cost me 14 grand ... getting it to churn out 300hp would cost me probably another 30 grand. Do the math...
Curiouz_G: If you read recalls Toyota's along with Honda's are some of the best made cars out there. If i was buying from ford or gm i would be worried about recalls and bugs... not with Toyota or Honda. And as far as filling with premium goes ... i put 93 in my civic so it wouldn't make a bit difference on that part.
brjhnson: I might be wrong but the last time i checked toyota is going after the mid-price range category ... z etc. so as far as i have heard the supra is going to be priced around the upper 30's. Oh, and no car compares to the skyline gt ... period ( i can't buy it 'cuz list price is way to much and if the supra is ever that expense i won't be buying that either).
Please don't take me the wrong way. I love my civic. But i just so why i should upgrade a civic if i swap the engine out ... 'cuz once you swap out the engine its not a civic anymore ... yeah body wise still is, but in reality its not so you are not "really" tunning a civic.
I don't mean no hate. These are just responses to the post. Other than this i appreciate all the feedback from everyone and look forward to more.

have you looked at the older supras and their price tags? almost 30k for a really good condition 10yr old car. i doubt a new supra will be in that price range with all the hype it's been getting.
i mean, that's cool that you go and make your claim, but most of us won't believe you - i'm sure you've heard of people say they want to do something, but they are full of crap. i know i do.
anyways, street racing is lame, i agree with you 100% on wanting to be safe. sorry for the loss of your friend, but he shouldn't have been racing on a public road.

well he was the most careful person on a bike .. but its destiny. You die the way its written you will. Thanks.
And like i said if it is in the upper 60's i won't be buying it 'cuz that is just way out of my range ;-)
I was going through the faq section and i just wanted to thank all those who putted all that effort and time into it. It really is very throughly informative.
... and yes g i know it still beat a 911 :-)

Sorry, I find it very hard to believe it would take $30k to get a K20a to 300hp. And regarding my math: If I didn't think it was a feasible alternative to dropping a ton of coin on a new car and eating the depreciation right after you drive it off the dealer's lot, then I would not have mentioned it.
I agree that the D17 sucks big time, but if that's the only part of the car you don't like, why not change it?
