H23 vtec or H22A
I am going to put a "Big Block" Honda engine in my civic so I am wondering if building a H23 and frankensteining it is a better overall combomation than buying a JDM H22?any assitiance is appreciated
When are you planning to have the Civic on the road? If you have the time for the planning and installing go for the H23 Vtec, if you're a little short on time order a JDM H22 and swap. Either one ... Great choice.
Obviously any pure engine is better than any kind of Frankenstein. Frankenstein never lived for a reason, so I'll take my H22A for the ease of the swap, longevity, reliability etc. etc. etc. Unless ofcourse this "H23 vtec" engine you speak of is the hard to find factory H23 DOHC VTEC honda engine....

an argument could be made of this, a properly build frankenstein motor can last just as long as an oem honda motor especially if you use all OEM parts to build it.
this OP sounds lazy, just drop a h22 in a call it a day. most civic owners will be to rev happy for a h23 vtec

Based on my understanding of the H23 vtec is that it makes around the same amount of hp that the H22 does, but with a little more tg. And to build one "reliably", well I've heard anything from 3k-8k. That's a waste of money IMO. The H23 vtec IMO is not one of the most advantageous frankesteins. I mean you'll make around the same amt of hp with a slight increase of tq, and you'll gain .1 liters of displacement. Not worth the money.
This is all based on my understanding, so if my info is wrong someone school me.
But H22 FTW.

what is involved in this "build up" if your going to be disassembling the bottem end then i say go h23vtec. it wont cost any more then the h22, maybe even cheaper.
if you not dissembling the bottom then go h22. one of the keys to making a h23 vtec last is proper balancing of the bottom end...my personal opinion is to add the oil squirters also...

I second that notion, less headaches.
