mp3 cell phone with FM modulator
Would those cell phones that have a built-in MP3 player with memory card work with FM modulators with the right adaptor cables? I'm assuming it would but maybe not? Specifically I was looking at http://www2.sprint.com/mr/news_dtl.do?id=12140 TIA

Yea I know but my car doesn't have bluetooth and the FM transmitter has bad quality. I'd think that an FM modulator would have better quality than the trasmitter, not sure though because I don't really have any experience with either that much. I already have an FM modulator installed BTW, that I got for free. My brother said his Xm transmitter only really works if you hold the XM radio (it's a portable one, not wired in) like 2 inches from the radio, and that's what people on H-T have been saying. But then again, would an FM modulator be any better?
There are 2 types of FM modulators, wired and none wired, [or transmitter type]
For obvious reasons getting the audio signal from any audio device, [iPod, MP3, or cell phone] into the FM tuner of a radio must be done through the radios ant., transmitting it, through air, like a radio station is susceptible to the same problems as a radio station has, except the radio station has 50,000+ watts of power, take my word for it your cell phone does not, so transmitting the signal to the FM radio receiver from inside the car, no matter how close to the radio it is will be problematic, it would work much better if placed next to the ant.
A wired FM modulator is plugged directly into the ant. port of the HU, allowing for much better "reception", however no matter how it is done SQ can never be any better then the FM receivers SQ.
I would check to see if there is a "docking" unit for the cell phone, like the hands free adaptor that will give you a preamp audio signal output from the phone, that can be plugged into an adaptor that uses the HUs changer port as an AUX input, this assumes your car's HU is a CD changer controller.

The modulator I have only had from what I remember a power and ground wire wired in so I guess it's a transmitter kind. So it's basically the same thing as the transmitter in the cell phone, or should it be better quality? BTW I have the stock CD player right now.
The one you have may be a little more powerful as it runs on 12V DC and the phone one will be 1/2 that.
If your stock HU is a changer controller HU, then you can get an adaptor that will change the changer port, [on back of HU] to a AUX input port], and as long as the phone has a docking adaptor, [like the hands free adaptor] that gives you an AUX output, then you have a "direct" preamp audio connection to the HU, and much better SQ then FM mod, and no interference/reception problems.

I've done this before, and yes it works, but most cellphones have the 2.5mm/1/16" TRS connector. You will need to get a 1/16" - 1/8" TRS adapter. And then to a transmitter or aux in on the stereo.
