Thinking of helping a friend out. He's a pretty heavy Jazz listener..Odyssey van
The van is a previous gen Ody. 2002
Well he has a 60x4 watt Alpine 78XX err 79XX says 60x4 watt on the face..
Now he listens to a lot of Jazz music and we were wondering on how the system could be upgraded.
So far its been thought of:
2 pairs of 63.7 infinity kappa speakers (6.5 inch)?
An AudioBahn amp as well?
And some dynamatting?
Where would the matting needed to be installed?
The install will either be done DIY or by Des on here
EDIT: needed to add year

for the price.. mb quart premuim speakers really play that type of music well..
they tend to have a more "full" spectrum of sound.. id run 6.5 components in the fronts, 6.5s (woofers only) in the rear for fill.. (since its a van) and one 12 inch sub.
id amp the front and rears with a 4-channel amp, turn the gains on the rears down slightly lower than the fronts.. run the sub off a monoblock sub amp and get a nice EQ.. to start.. lol gl

The Kappa's are 2OHM speakers, the HU is 4OHM so woudn't a 4 channel amp be needed?
and is this a good sub? http://www.crutchfield.com/S-4...1#Tab
or would an Audiobahn or Bazooka 8" self powered sub be a better choice?

I'm only saying 8 because Des and several others all of which are knowledgeable at audio say 8 inch is the way to go for Jazz listener and not a boomer

an 8 inch sub may have a hard time "filling" the interior space in the van..
although a 12 inch sub is thought of as a "boomer", there still are accurate subs of this size.
its really personal preference.. but the smallest sub i would use in a van like this would be a powerful 10 inch

Any compact units?
Bazooka seems to take the cake at the moment ?
We need a small box

if you really wanna go all out with dynamat..
i would install it:
-outer and inner skeleton of doors.
-firewall.
-floorboard.
..basically anywhere near a speaker for starters..
in my integra i am running a 3 way component set
(6.5" woofer in each front door)(4" midrange and 1" tweets in kick panels)
no rear speakers and a 12 inch sub in a sealed enclosure.
its all JL.. amps, speakers, sub. i wont rant about it being JL but its great for my ears.
overall when messing around with car audio.. its about 1. installation, 2. tuning & EQ, 3. sound deadening, and 4. installation..... your equipment does matter.
buttttt, a well thought about install with shitty equipment will probably sound better than a shitty install with better equipment

JL's 10w6v2 can be very efficient in a small, sealed enclosure.
check it out on their website- jlaudio.com
i stand by JL for the most part.. sometimes are overpriced, but if you can find a nice deal.. its pretty reputable equipment

Those?
They are self powered right? </TD></TR></TABLE>
that is just a JL 10w6 in a JL box built by JL to their specs for the sub.
you can use that or design your own sealed box, which is not too too difficult..
but to answer your question, that sub would still need to be amplified.. the amplifier is not included.. using a JL slash series 500/1 amp would be quite the match

If Des does it for you I would just go with what he recommends. Installers in general like it when customers give them the freedom as well as the trust with their cars.
Any compact boxes?
Like the JL(already assembled?)
now woudl a capacitor be needed with all that jazz?

Also if space doesn't provide for hte box sub can a bazooka be mounted vertically or no?

why not research and do your own car. save your money.. however much it may be.. and learn something.
just take your time, and post if you need help.
go take a listen to the equipment at your local audio store.. like i said.. i recommend MB's for the price and quality and clarity as well as fullness and smooth highs.
one question, why is space such an issue for the subwoofer/sub & amp setup?

running a 1/2 farad capacitor wouldnt hurt the system.. but its going to cost money....
and i wouldnt recomment bazooka tubes.. i dont know, for my opinion, i think they are cheap looking.. as well as cheap sounding.
but some people stand by them so its personal preference there.

Space is an issue because he needs to carry stuff in and out of the van. The location planned for the sub is where the oddysee trunk goes down and under in the back like---___|

It sounds like your friend has a Alpine CDA-7893/94 [very niece, if it is] you will be very surprised at how good you can get that HU to sound, the built in 4x27W RMS into 4 ohms @ 14.4V amp can push 4 properly installed 6.5" speakers to the point people will think you have an amp and sub, it's all in the installation.
Is the HU installed in the Ody. now and your looking to "upgrade" the system, or are you starting from scratch and your friend just happens to have an Alpine HU laying around, [it is an older unit], find out if it is a CDA-7893/94.
There are many good 6.5" speakers out there, including the Infinity, although I would stick with the 2way, Kappa62.7l], unfortunately, as has been mentioned, the Infinity is a 2 ohm speaker, if you want to use the 4ch HU amp you will need 4 ohm speakers, the Alpine CDA-7893/94 is not stable at 2 ohms at higher SPL levels, overheating is an issue.
I have that HU, [CDA-7893] driving 4 Eclipse 6.5" speakers, although nothing special was done with the install, HU is recessed a little, a 10-12ga fused lead is run from the batt. to behind the HU for the HUs constant power, the constant in the oem radio harness is not used.
The very good SQ, including bass response, comes from properly speakers with extensive Dynamating in the front doors, and "some" in the rear speaker locations.
If space is an issue, maybe don't go with a sub and amp, just like "all motor" all HU can also be made to perform.

I have done a 8 in a honda odd before and it sounded great. It was not to boom but to fill the void that the 612 could not provide. Now with space at a issue a small 100watt amp and a small box would do him fine. Your friend needs to throw out the ideal that a 2 ohm speaker is going to sound better then a 4 ohm. Ohm do not make a speaker sound better. That headunit should do you fine with a small sub in the back imo. But hey its your car.

I don't think there's enough roof for a sub, only the kenwood stealthbox if anything.
