Default Hydo-planing in the SI

Hello all,

Last night was the first good rain we have gotten here in Bay Area. Last night was also the first time I had driven my 2006 Civic SI in the rain.

On several occasions, when going over bumps or railroad tracks, it felt like the front tires would slide. I also noticed this "slipping", when driving over road paint (cross walks). At one point I hit a wide puddle at about 60mph that was only, maybe, 1/2 an inch deep. Thank goodness it was on a straight strip of road because it felt like I had no front steering control.

I don't recall this happening in my old civic, is it save to assume I got the wrong tires on this car for wet weather, or is there something else going on?

Thanks

oem michelins are absolute crap

i recently picked up a set of " high performance tires' goodyear f1 ds g3's and they have ANTI hydroplane technology

i've NEVER in my life , felt safe in the dry, wet ..hell on the ROAD then with these tires, grip is amazing & they hold true that ZERO hydro even in some VERY HARSH conditions i've been driving in lately

BUY THEM!

for what the OEM tire was designed for it does extremely well.

I do not agree, for an automatic civic.. its perfect

But for a car they equipped with an 8kredline, lsd, close gear 6spd tranny...

they are the WORST tires to showcase those features.... which is probably why there are so many crashes.

I drove my car insanely hard down at the dragon run, and if i were on oem tires i would have been off the road or dead.

Yeah, it is very easy to make the car slide with the all seasons.

i got in on the "clearance" price on tirerack.com
i paid 88 a piece for them , they are usually about 140+ a tire

they won first place in car and drivers test if u google up a review
i'd check there maybe another special coming up

Even with excellent tires hydroplaning can still be an issue. as mike mentioned purchasing a higher quality tire will help avoid issues in the rain but its not going to make your car non-susceptible to hydro-planing. This is for all makes and models of vehicles, not just Si's or Hondas. If youre ever in a hydroplane situation keep the wheel straight(if possible) and ease off the gas... braking, jerking the steering wheel or hammering the throttle will make things MUCH worse.

Thanks for the feedback on the tires.

I am going to take your advise Mike and head down to Wheel Works this weekend. Hopefully they carry the Goodyear F1 DS G3's you mention in your post.

Thanks again.

I have hte dunlop fm901 the "recommended" tire for the HFP 18s.

It was slightly wet outside today. I started on a hill from a light (uphill) at a light in philly. Light on throttle, 1k or so engagement.... I managed to spin thru most of third without giving hardly any gas and shifting at 4k.

Going down the highway when its wet, all I need to do is slightly nudge the gas in third or fourth and im spinning.

... I need better tires =P

...Though Im gonna bet the dealer underinflated them by like 5psi a piece when I was there getting service recently.

*runs out and checks*

I was looking at getting the michilin exalto pilot a/s cause the stock ex tires suck and I wanted the all season traction and have decent handling in the dry months. I realize its an all season but if it's gonna suck in the rain and still suck in dry weather i don't want it Does this tire suck too? cause from the reviews i read everyone liked it for an all season tire but what do you guys think any recommendations would be great!
