Default Hows the H23 Tranny compared to the H22 tranny when turbo (n00b question)

i dont understand ratios at all im running a POS f22 tranny atm on my h22 (long story behind it)
here are the ratios copied

4th Gen
F22/S- H23a/Si - H22a/VTEC
--M2L5----M2S4----M2F4
1 - 3.307 - 3.307 - 3.307
2 - 1.810 - 1.857 - 1.950
3 - 1.230 - 1.320 - 1.360
4 - 0.903 - 1.034 - 1.071
5 - 0.705 - 0.812 - 0.870
FD 4.062 - 4.266 - 4.266

in the f22 i can get to 70 in 2nd gear and its at 7200 when i shift and when i shift at 7200 in 1st goin to 2nd i drop to like 4600 thats with some quick shifting too

if you use the array algorithms, minus the exponential factor of the wheel speed vs engine rpm.. you can use the coolant temperature sensor to display false signals to the ecm to raise the rpm level that you will land when you shift

"Hows the H23 Tranny compared to the H22 tranny when turbo (n00b question)"

based on this part you ask. the h23 would be better boosted. why, longer gears. your able to say in boost a bit longer with longer gears. a f22 would let you stay in longer than the h23. h22 are great for N/A.

I like the h23 trans on the h22 all around NA and/or forced induction. But for turbo I'd say its the way to go.

You want the H22 trans for NA. Shorter gear ratios...faster car.

I've never understood why people obess over "long gears = fast 4 turbo, yo!"

Shorter gear ratios, faster car. Period. A long geared tranny is less of a disadvantage vs a shorter tranny on a turbo car than a NA car, but that doesn't mean you need "long gears, yo"

But the H23 tranny is pretty close to the H22 tranny, so don't go nuts over it.

Have you compaired these transmssions yourself on the same car just changing the transmission only and racing it again to compair the results? Or just going off what you "think" you know.

its all about the powerband, go too short, and you will lose a lot of time shifting, go too long and you take forever to reach your powerband and fall below it when you shift

not all turbo cars have a super long powerband, and not all NA cars have a super short powerband, so its not that simple.....

Couldnt have said it better myself. I go off what works for me in my own personal R&D

Back when I had a 400+whp boosted setup I was using an H22 tranny at the time, because the F23 tranny I was going to use had problems. With the H22 tranny all it seemed like I was doing when accelerating was shifting gears because I went through them so fast. Being able to spend a little more time in gear is of benefit for boosted setups.

I find it also helps match wheel speed to rpm better staying in the gear a little longer. I think the H23 trans is a better overall trans. I think its not to long no to short

longer gear = longer time in turbo

unless you're crazy and have sequential shifting...otherwise you'll spend a lot of time shifting.

find what matches your setup best. you can always try em out . trial and error

There are alot of things that come into factor tire size, spool time. yadda yadda yadda. Im my findings the H23 works good but the f22 tranny is just to long You may be in boost longer but there is a such thing as to long and too... short.

i will soon be going 5spd in another month or two. i wanted the h23 all together. higher top speed, don't have to shift as quick, better gas mileage because your rpm's won't be as high as with the h22. and its between the h22 and f22.

keep hondata's feature - full throttle shift - in mind, that would lose much less boost in between gears...though i do assume that the temporary loss of load would slow down the turbo....

guys who know, chime in

also, keep in mind that the jdm h22 trannies have the h23 fifth gear...

It defiantly will drop off some even on a full throttle shift because there is no load . Its like reving your car @ idle its not going to just build boost right off the bat, especially not the same boost you would be @ when shifting

lol i never understood why people want longer gaering in a turbo car or any 1/4 mile setup car ..shorter gear ratio = quicker 1/4 mile times

I disagree. Yes there is a such thing as to long but.. at the same time to short of a gear doesn't able you to use your power also. I did this myself to see what I like better and works better for myself. Again you have to factor in wheel diameter, power band, ect.

I had a simple setup I put together for a buddy to have some fun and be reliable. I tested back to back pretty much same weather/ conditions 2years ago. The first test was on a friday the 2nd test was 2days later on sunday same track. 95 prelude H22 I/H/E zex kit, 225 50 15 bfg's. With the h22 tranny the cars best pass out of 4 was a 13.41@105.2 on a 71 degree day(friday). Same track on sunday 74 degrees same bottle pressure, tire pressure everything was the same but the tranny it picked up ever pass out of 3 the best pass being a 13.17@107.1

I not one to care what people read and think they know on here. I just give my 2cents on what I have actually done and/or seen with my own 2 eyes and/or driven down the track myself. Everybody has there own views this is mine.
