Default speedometer and fuel level gauges not working?

first my speedo went out, it would come and go, but now mainy the needle just sits @ 20 and does nothing. i checked the sensor and changed it anyway, but still no worky. then about a week ago my fuel needle would go all the way up to full then go all the way down, no matter how fule the tank is. it stays @ full all the time now. maybe its the level sending unit but i think not. could these two probs be connected. i checked all wires in on the harness from the ss, they look fine. i took the cluster out to check wires, look fine. it's a 97 ex if that makes a difference, i know it doesn't. anyone have any ideas? im lost
