What to do with foggy headlights
I have a 5th gen that had HORRIBLE headlights--all yellow and crap. I tried all kinds of rubbing compounds and junk, the best ones only worked for about a month untill they just went back to crap.
So, I asked a guy at a napa auto. He said to clean them off with something like dawn soap. Use 600 grit sandpaper to WETSAND them. Dry them off and use some clear acrylic spray paint stuff on them. It worked awesome. When I wet sanded them, they looked A LOT worse than before. But, as soon as you spray that clear on there, they clear up like glass. Pretty cheap too. Good luck, hope this helped.

Are you sure this problem is an exterior problem... by the looks of it, it seems that its dew underneath the glass. Im probably wrong. Thx for the advice.

Trust me on this, it's on the outside. What has happened is that the clear coat has gone away on the front of your lense, so now it starts to oxidize from the heat of the sun and the heat from your light bulb....I've taken plenty of lights apart, because I do retrofits, and I've gotten alot of headlights with the same problem as yours. After you wet sand, I'd suggest buying some lamin- from http://www.lamin-x.com so that you don't have to keep polishing your lenses every week.

I wet sanded until my hand were sore. After that I put on some plastiX which is some type of solution for headlights that i bought from advanced autoparts. It seems like it may have cleared up slightly but I think its just me hoping it is. When you guys say polish it what do u mean? I used that plastiX thing
. I might just have to get a new headlight $300 later
. Should I polish with car wax?
^ try using 3m rubbing compound to polish your lights and it will work 20x better if you use a professonal grade polisher or at least some type of buffer
and to prelude1897, i know you do a lot of retrofits for ppl here on h-t and probably elsewhere so i'm guessing you use that lamin stuff in your link and it works pretty good? i ask b/c they also have films for pda's etc. and every film i've seen for small lcd screen electronics has at least a small amount of haze to it. would you suggest some type of clear coat or anything else? thanks in advance

I'm going to let you know exactly what to do, I just did it to my 4th gens JDM lights last week. Wet sand them with around 600 gritt, don't sand the **** out of them or they will spot. Litteraly, spend maybe 5 mins on each headlight. CONSTANTLY wet them, dont let the white stuff build up or it will look like ****.
When your rubbing the sand paper back and forwth, and it gets really easy and smooth, its time to stop. Clean them, then clear em'.

its gonna take WAY more than 5 minutes on each headlight to do just the wetsanding... depending on how bad the headlights are... the time I spent on each headlight (JDM one-pieces) was at least a couple hours... I used the 600 grit to get rid of all the clear coat... then spent at least another 15 minutes on each headlight using 1000 grit wetsanded.... then another 15 minutes on each headlight using 1500 grit wetsanded...
I just did the wet sanding part.... and that alone makes your headlights look nice....

yea... I don't think its the outside part of the headlight b/c its a glass headlight... I think people are assuming that you're talking about the JDM One Pieces....

See, you cant sand them like that if you're going to clear them. If you sand them that much and then clear them, you'll have blemishes all over the place.
If you say that works, then its a second way of doing it. I had access to a paint booth so that made it easier for me to clear them.

This is what i did and i had astonishing results.
I used type 600 and type 2000 sand paper first, .. make sure you get all the scuffs off with the 600, but you cannot settle on 600 alone because it leaves scrartches/marks...then use 2000 for a while to get all the small scratch lines out...make sure to do it well..
Then i used the "5 minute headlight cleaner kit" which includes a drill piece (kind of like polish car but for head lights) with some "mineral compounds", anyway couple minutes with it and the drill it cleared the headlight up completely without marks / scratches anything. then i used plastX or whatever that rubbing compounds (pep boys have it) is called
BUT THE RESULTS ARE ASTONISHING!!!!! i swear my head lights looked like i could throw them away, and i was going to buy new ones but OH MY GOD!!!! they look ****** BRAND new again!!! GUYS THIS IS THE WAY TO GO I SWEAR!!!

i wetsanded my headlights 600 to 1500 grit, put rubbing compound on and tried Mag PlacticX on it... i am not geting any clean lookin headlights... what eles should i do? should i try buff it out with a buffer??
y'know when i got my 5th gen my headlights were all hazy and yellow and i tried all sorts of stuff and it did'nt work, so i went to autozone and found this "bluemagic headlight lens restorer" and just read the instructions and all that crap finally came off and looks way better then i expected, only my .02 cents
or u can bake the light, remove the lense, sand both sides until its nice and clear.. then new clearcoat (prelude1897's method) or use the headlight restoration stuff on it then lamin-X it. ^-- thats if the light won't de-yellow after a lot of effort (meaning the inside is yellow too)
