Default help with megan header / blown gasket

well i had a megan header install on my lude the other week. and not a week goes by and i start hearing a weird sound. the gasket between the exhaust manifold and the downpipe blew. My mechanic said that it was due to the uneven machining by megan. He suggested putting 2 gaskets and lots of high temp silicon in there to solve the problem. I called megan and they said that it was due to the torqueyness of my car, it having high miles and all (142,xxx). they suggested following the torque pattern when reinstalling the gasket. front bolt, than the rear two all 1/2 way then torque down in the same pattern.

Im left wondering what to do. Is there anything you guys can suggest aside from just welding the two pipes together to solve the problem once and for all. I dont want to go through all of the work to put in 2 new gaskets only to have it fail a week later. Thanks!

this is what the gasket looks like, (note, this is not the actual gasket)

you have to torque them down. and torque them again later. I had a problem with a different company but same design. I had the hardest time trying to find the gasket. Did you just get it from megan? I ended up tightening the bolts twice once when I installed and once a week later or so.

i am getting them through megan, i think they are 5 bucks a piece. so torquing the down again solved your problem, cuz i guess i will try that, i just dont want o have to do it every week. i am hoping 2 will work.

this does not make me feel confindent about installing my megan header for my lude. I bought it new/open box from a fellow user of H-T. And the the primary gasket was all bent up from the shipping. So i flatened with weight on top of it. Possibly getting it installed tomorrow from my mechanic.

I too am putting my megan header on my h22a. It should be done by wednesday, I had to get a tranny rebuild and the mechanic is throwing it on there for me. Hopefully it was just a fluke. Cause all the research I did, No one else had this problem.

The studs and nuts used on this header is crapy.

Drill out and use som real stainless nuts and bolts, then tight it firmley..

Do not use 2 gastkets. That is just asking for more trouble later as exhaust WILL eventaully break through between the two gaskets causing a bad leak. GEt a new gasket and torque them correctly and to the appropraite values. DO NOT just tighten one bolt ALL THE WAY, then another, then another, and so on. You probably warped the union plates by unevenly tightening bolts and crushed/tore the gasket casuing your leak.

I'm dealing with this now too.

Is it possible to just buy a really thick gasket and cut it to size and sandwich it all together?

I'm thinking about throwing this whole **** in the trash, bite the bullet and just buy a DC header/downpipe.

Why to waste your money into DC/megan since theyre just oem replacement parts? You can get as good no name ebay header if you don't have your stock one left
