I am quoting for truth. You do have to drop the subframe to get it out.

The subframe's gotta come out first. There is a way to get it out the top (at least the M/T will). AT is bigger, don't know how that would work.
Grab the motor with a hoist before you unbolt the motor mount from the subframe.

You can, but you have to drop the subframe to get it out. Or risk dropping it on the fender if you take it out up top.

yes, but if you have the motor on a jack stand (I really hope you don't have a jackstand under the oil pan) then you won't really be able to move the subframe too far (jack stand in the way), and you'll be stuck working with the subframe in the way under the car.

I'd rather work around the subframe, then try and lift it through the engine bay. That'd require removing most every wiring harness and cable on that side of the engine, which would be a pain in the butt. Not to mention any other problems that may arise in the process, like damaging the fender if my fingers slipped.

If you're gonna pull it through the top, you don't grab it with your hands... you use an engine hoist.
My point with the subframe is if you take a square frame, and put a jack stand in the middle of it, its only going to move so far over before it hits the jackstand, whereas if you used the hoist to grab the motor, you can take out the subframe and pull it completely out from under the car and work without the interference.
