Default Belt squeal upon startup.

My 98 prelude sat for a while before I purchased it. It only seemed to be driven a few thousand miles the past couple years. When I start my car and its sat for more than 20 minutes or so, a belt squeals as i'm starting the car up. Only momentarily if I've previous run the car, and sometimes very loud and a good 5-10 seconds long when its sat overnight or its cold. Its MUCH worse in wet/muggy weather.

I'm thinking alternator belt?

most likely....tighten it up! if u dont know how then take it somewhere...it may be the ps belt but usually the alt belt squeals when u start it so it sounds like the slt belt is loose. and if the car sits this much it may need New belts.

yep, i would tighten it up. there is a adjustment below the alternator. i believe there it's a 10 mm.

Mine was gone. there werent no bracket on the other end for adjustment. h22 power broke it off. i had to go buy a new one. my belt's sqeaking even i'm driving at 25 mph.

To tighten the alternator belt there is an 10mm adjustment screw in the front to the right. There is a locknut that u must loosen in order to move the adjustment screw, it is on the underside of the alternator to the right, use a 12mm box wrench to loosen this. So just loosen the locknut then tighten the adjustment bolt till the belt seems tight. Then tighten the locknut back up and start her up and see if it squeels.

PS I would unhook the battery just for safty purposes. Just take the negative off, its usually a 10mm nut, just use an open end.

I'll give it a try tomorrow.

Okay, now I noticed that when I turn on the A/C to defog the windows and the car isnt warmed up the belt squeels like no other. I'm going to go ahead and assume its the A/C belt, what do you think?

It didnt look frayed, so maybe its too tight.

Ya its the A/C belt. All you have to do is tighten it. (5 seconds).

I'd avoid using those "belt dressing" sprays. My experience is that they work for a day or so then make the problem worse.

How do I tighten it? A picture showing the bolt to tighten would be best...I'm a visually learner.

First you got to loosen 2 of the 10mm mounting bolts holding the AC/PS pully, once that is loose there is a 12mm adjusting bolt (facing towards you at a angle) just tighten that untill you feel that the belt is tight enough then red-tighten the mounting bolts and start the car up and see if it squeal. Thats how I fixed mine. . If it wasn't so dark I'd take pics step-by-step. If you havent done it by tommorrow i'll take some pictures.

hmm first off the adjustment bolt is a 10mm and the two mounting bolts are 12 and 14 on the alt. so i don't know what car you working on but a 5th gen prelude thats how it is.

You fix the problem yet?

I had the same prob on my 4th gen. A/C squealed like crazy...needless to say I gutted all the a/c components afterwards.

pictures?

today i started it up and it squealed very, very loud for 30+ seconds, then stopped.

sometimes if i start driving when the car has been on for only a few (under 20) seconds, it'll squeal around 1000-1200 rpm.

it shouldn't be hard to figure out. there will be a big long bolt running next to whatever you're trying to tighten, ps pump, alternator, whatever. it's really impossible to miss.
