well not your "driveshafts" ( if you go to autozone asking for driveshafts for your accord they are going to look at you funny....) its your CV joints...(halfshaft assemblies). I replaced these on my '91 accord because of the same sounds. problem solved.

Are these expensive? Is the job labor intensive?

You can do these yourself with a jack and some hand tools... a deadblow, and a 2nd jack make it cake.

Not sure what shafts for your car cost, but after you return the cores... maybe $150 max.

Not if you know where to look. Maybe a hundred bucks a piece affter you turn in your old ones.

If you have a general common knowledge of how things come apart and then go back together, you can do the job yourself.

A photo for reference...

The only problem i had with replacing my CV axles was getting the bottom ball joint out of the taper it sits in. You need to do this so you can "swing" the knuckle out of the way to pull out and put in the CV axles. With a pipe and a hammer they finally came out - and with a small torch but i dont advise doing that unless you intent to replace the ball joints ( i didnt and later had to work on my car again to replace the ball joints i ruined).

To replace them you will need a large torque wrench (the axle nut torque is 220 ft. lbs. i believe) and a 36mm socket for the axle nut. You can rent both of these for free (after the core charge return), like i did when i replaced my CV joints.

My duralast brand halfshafts (CV axles) from Autozone cost my $222.00 and took roughly a day to do with limited tools, and while working in my garage. It is helpful to have a repair book for your car so you do it right. I used a Haynes manual for my repair job. Some people really hate the Haynes manuals but it was ok for doing the CV replacement job- it tells you what you need to know... basically anyone that can turn a wrench can do this job. It can be a little frustrating (especially trying to knock the lower ball joints loose) but you save alot of money and gain very valuable experience.

sorry i noticed you had a '98 accord. Im not sure if the 36 mm applies to your car or not (and the $222 for the axles). I have a 1991 accord lx that i replaced mine on. Anyway you can probably still do the job pretty much the same. -good luck

Thats lame i just spent a lot of money on just having one CV boot replaced a few months ago because "if i didnt replace it my joints were going to go bad" LOL a lot of good that did. Well question how long can you drive on these clicking?? i dont have the cash to repair it yet. And i found them for 80 a piece i assume both should be replaced if your doing it.

dang i got mine for 120 bucks (both sides) after core from pepboys

I drove on mine for about a year and a half but i also babied it while it clicked i never took it rough.

And replaceing is easy and very straight forward then you think. The only problem im having as of now (if uve seen my cv thread lol) is if i have it far enough or what lol. other then that its pretty simple man.
