Default 5th Gen low idle/putt noise/rattling

i have a 97 SH and a while ago my temp gauge started going up to about 3/4 of the way up. add coolant and that problem went away. since then my CEL and ATTS light come on for about a day or two at a time and then turn off for another 3 to 4 days. other than that my idle is constantly low. around the or less than the 500 mark. along with that it seems like the engine has kind of a "putt putt putt" sound when idle. I'm kind of hesitant to take it to a shop (bad experience). and last when in idle ill rev my engine and when the rpms are coming down there seems to be what can only be described as a rattle. Where do i start? i've searched and gone through just about every post in the 5th gen area without anything relevant to my case. any help would be greatly appreciated!

THANKS!

My 98 sh does the rattle thing as well. I have asked this question before, but did not get any responses. I have had it in the shop, but they could not diagnose the problem. I don't have any idle issues though. I was wondering if it could be some how related to my clutch or flywheel?

havent checked for a code yet? i took it to a shop and they said they would check my CEL code for $100. i've read that some places do it for free. rather use the $100 for body work. wondering more about the putt putt noise.

the rattling noise does it happen when it idles or when the car is revving around 1000-3000 rpm?

I get the rattle when accelerating or deccelerating, around 1000-2000 rpms.

Do a search on how to pull CEL codes and there is a way to short out the OBD2 port and it will make your dashboard engine light flash a series of flashes. Check the codes for discriptions. Dont get raped for 100 $ for something you can do with a paperclip. Once you get the code your throwing then work from there. Have you checked your spark plugs? I had a VW that the plugs would constantly back themselves out and eventually I would get a CEL and some misfiring/sputtering. It sounds like it could be ignition related like your running on 3 cylinders. Once you fix the problems your ATTS light should go out unless there is a problem with it, the CEL will trigger your ATTS to disable itself.

I notice the same thing in regards to the revs falling and then hearing the rattle. There doesn't seem to be any loss in power, also my check engine light is not on.

well just for an update my noise was caused by the timing belt tensioner was broken and my timing belt was slapping against the valve cover, my mechanic changed the tensioner since he was there did the timing belt too and changed all my pulley belts. the tensioner cost me 120$ overnighted from conn. i live on long island.

I had my timing belt checked because I assumed that was the culprit, but my mechanic said everything looked fine. Not sure what it could be.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Chuckles99SH &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Do a search on how to pull CEL codes and there is a way to short out the OBD2 port and it will make your dashboard engine light flash a series of flashes. On the passengers side of the center console there will be a panel that comes off and there will be a little 2 prong connector. Stick a paprclip in there and short out the connector (connect both sides) and then turn your key to ON, NOT START, just ON. the check engine light will flash a series of times. Long flashes mean 10s and short flashes mean 1s. For example 2 long flashes and 3 short flashes would be code 23....

I was told(just got the car) that my idle problem was that the EGR needed to be cleaned out. I did that very well, I was amazed how much carbon I was able to clean out and I still have the problem. New plugs, wires, cap and rotor. Im going to switch the number 1 injector over to another cylinder and change the plugs again and see if the misfire follows the injector or goes away after changing the plugs again.

Does anyone have any other ideas?
