Default 2003 Civic EX, getting 270 miles per tank, lower than average??

My girls 2003 EX auto is getting 270 miles to a tank. When she bought it new, it got about 330. The dealer recently did the 30K maintaince (air filter, oil change, etc.) and it still didnt improve. What are you guys averaging? What may cause the drop in mileage?
Thanks

In town or highway?
thats give or take 26 to the gallon, which isn't too terrible if its all city driving. I can do anywhere between 280 and 420 depending on how much city or highway driving I do on a given tank.

lets not forget auto's generally do consume more gas than a standard. My girlfriends 00 SIG Auto does about 450 KM's per a tank, mine tank full wit the same amount of gas does about 600km's.( i drive harder too)

Thanks for the input.

She got about 310 mostly highway last week.
This week shes probably gonna get 260ish.

What do you think the problem is??? Do these cars have spark plugs?? Any other ideas??

How many gallons of gas are you putting in at the time she gets 260miles? Because I've had my Empty light on, and still got another 80 miles out of a tank.

I never get less then 330 on a tank city or highway. check your tire pressures and pull that air filter out to be sure they changed it. They have spark plugs but they are iridium tiped and dont need to be chaned for like 100k miles although I do mine every 60k

Nothing. That is all the d17a2 requires. it's compression is not high enough to NEED anything else.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Killtodie &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">you do have vtech and you realize that it needs 93 right... right?

Wrong. And besides, It is spelled VTEC. No H, just plain 'ol VTEC.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Killtodie &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">lower millage on higher octane? wtf</TD></TR></TABLE>

It is the same way for me. It takes more compression on a higher octane to obtain the same combustion rate that a lower octane, lower compression motor needs.

A non Turbo/SC/Nitrous or a high compression NA setup needs higher octane fuel, not a weenie of a motor such as the d17.

EDIT: BTW,

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Killtodie &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">Yes that it, I put in an aftermarket gas tank...

So what you are saying is, "I put in an aftermarket tank, but I still only have a 13.5 gallon tank like my manual says, but yet it will hold 15 gallons"

How exactly does that work?

Nothing is wrong with me, my car only requires 87 octane, and the timing is set for 87 octane. Going above that would require me to re-setup the timing on my car, and would yield zero results in the long run (and cost a rediculous amount more per year).

Not sure where you live but the price difference here between 87 and 93 is like $30 at most. Its less then 15%.

You have an EX, you have Vtech, unless you messed with it your vtech, not only recomands 93, but adjusts to whatever gas you use.

And i never ever heard anyone getting worse perfomance from 93. Not only does it run cleaner, you get more power and better fuel economy, so unless you messed with vtech...

I don't see an H in there anywhere....VTEC

I am assuming you meant 30 cents, not $30.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Killtodie &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">You have an EX, you have Vtech, unless you messed with it your vtech, not only recomands 93, but adjusts to whatever gas you use.</TD></TR></TABLE>

Really? My EX maual says MY D17A2 VTEC engine only requires 87 octane... But what does Honda know about a D17A2 motor huh?

And a motor does not "adjust" to the octane you put in.

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by Killtodie &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">And i never ever heard anyone getting worse perfomance from 93. You do not get more power from anything like that unless you have modifications to warrant the money and tuning time to be able to use a certain fuel.

Do you even know what an octane rating means?

I'm not a millionaire, so saving money is a smart thing.

Yes, I've got an EX, and yes it does have Vtec. But, no car that I know of "adjusts" to the Octane you're using.

And, for the record, your car will NOT run cleaner, nor get better fuel economy with a higher octane. You may get a couple hp for an 87 to a 93 Octane jump, ONLY if you adjust the timing to handle the different firing rate.

Don't believe me? Go buy some racing fuel, around 114 Octane or so, and see how well your car runs... if at all.

Actually, the owner's manual says approximately 13.2 gallons. And there is no way you're getting 15 gallons in that tank. Where's the space for the extra 2 gallons coming from?

You read wrong...

First off VTEC does not adjust timing anyways. It simply adjusts lift and duration of the valves under certain operating parameters. If the camshaft gear is a solid piece, and not adjustable, then the timing cannot be adjusted like that.

Picture for reference......... What is adjustable about this cam gear?

Now tell me, what is adjustable about these cam gears.......

Its "safe" capasity is 13 gallons. but if you throw more fuel in it can fill upto 15.
