engine heat killing starter?
when i drive my car it gets to the normal operating temperature and when im driving the car harder it getts hotter (in the engine bay, not the temp gauge), everything is fine but im starting to think my starter is taking a **** due to heat soak.... ill run in a store after driving on the highway or spirted driving and go out to my car and it wont start for like an hour. wont even crank at all... fuel pump turns on... blah blah.. electrical is fine... but just wont crank for like an hour or so until after its cooler i assume... wtf is this all about? doesnt seem like a main relay thing cuz here its not hot outside anymore. comments?
btw its a b18b motor

- Check all your ground wires on the engine.
- Maybe check the ignition wires for damage
- Replace starter
1. engine temp shouldn't effect it, don't question me about that, it's logical.
2. main relay has nothing to do with starter.
see page 534 of the CRX workshop manual

Mine does the same thing, if I drive the car hard its worse. I have to keep a big piece of metal in the back so I can hit the solenoid. Its commin, the solenoid basically sticks. Hitting it frees it up, try it next time. Have someone crank the car while you hit it, or you can hit it and go back in and turn the key.
I had the exact same problem and I too thought it was heat soak. I replaced the starter and the same problem still happened. Well it turns out that there is a ground cable connected from the clutch cable bracket on the tranny to the frame of the car that had completly fallen off. This is a very important grounding point for the starter so if the cable is loose or corroded you will get the intermitent problems with the starter working sometimes and if it is not there the starter may not work at all. So basically heat soak is not your problem. Either the starter is bad or you need to check the main grounds on the motor. My CRX with GSR motor has three main ones which are on the clutch cable bracket on the tranny, valve cover and another on the back of the block. Poor grounds can cause very strange problems. Believe it or not, when the ground cable from the tranny fell off it started grounding from the VSS cable that operates my speedo and somehow it completed a circuit that caused the speedo needle to melt of the gauge cluster because the VSS cable got so hot. Anyway, let me know if this helped you out.

Just to clarify, I did not mention ground wires will fail if they get hot. I was explaining what had happened when the ground wire from the tranny completely fell off. The speedo needle melting off was just one problem. The battery was also losing charge because the alternator was failing, all lights were dimming even while driving and my voltage gauge on my deck was showing 9.4 volts at its worst. I finally had to take it to my mechanic to diagnose the entire charging system and once he identified the source of the problem I could not believe that all this was a result of one single grounding source. If the grounds are okay, remove your starter and take it to a auto parts store so they can check if the solenoid is working. If all these things still result to a no start then the next thing is your ignition.

just for the record the starter was the problem. it was some remanufactured aftermarket junk. looked new but hey.. sometimes stock is best. it looked like a starter for an automatic also... it was huge. threw on a used b mt starter and shes fires right up now.
