Rim Spray, PowerCoat. Etc.
I have heard of people spraying their rims with a certain kind if "paint" as oppossed to paying for a powdercoating. Anyone know how this is done or have any advice?
Just a note, i wanna paint either 99-00 Si, 97 GSR, or 98-01 GSR rims gun metal..

Painting is just that. You get some cans of spay paint the color you want and go at it. To do it right, you might want to sand, prime, spray a few coats, and clearcoat it. Lots of people just spray it, and it comes out fine. It doesn't last forever though.
Powdercoating is a somewhat complicated process. It can't be done at home. You usually take it somewhere that specializes in powdercoating. A full job would include sandblasing the wheel first. Then it is put through a machine that charges the wheel. Then paint particles of an opposite charge are sprayed on. I believe somewhere in these steps, the wheel is superheated as well.
After that, you're done. Good powdercoating usually lasts the life of the wheel, whereas good painting will last about a year at most.

i know this isnt helping your problems, but i feel its kind of gay to paint a oem honda wheel, if you want a custom look get some wheels, why waste all the time painting/powder coating a factory wheel. Not my cup of tea. That is on the verge of being rice, if not already rice.
i painted my wheels
here is what i did
the paint i used was duplicolor wheel paint, the color is graphite grey
i got mine from kragen
what i did was
1. take off the wheels
2. then clean the rims with a degreaser
3. sand them with 320 grit sandpaper
4. wash off the wheels again and dry them
5. to mask the wheel from the tire I used 3.5 inch cards that you can get at office max and I put them between the tire and the wheel all the way around the wheel
(its alot easier and faster then using masking tape and newspaper)
6. sprayed on a light coat then every 10 minutes i would spray on another light coat (sprayed about 6 coats in all)
7. after I let it dry for about an hour, then i put them on my car
hope that helps out
oh and this is how they came out

Thanks RoaringTurtle! Gave me everything I needed and your car is sweet. I am liking hatches more and more every day... ek9 I know what you're saying about "ricey" but the thing is, I really like the OEM rims but I need them in a different color to match up with my car. Also, getting OEM rims done up is cheaper then buying an all new set. Not everyone can afford new rims! Thanks everyone!
yea granted the price of rims is expensive, but you can find some nice wheels on thepartstrader.com for under 900 bucks, and slipstreams for like 400. But its cool though, its your style and your taste. Dont let people tell you what is cool and how your ride should look

If its done right, the paint should last more than a year. But if your using spray paint dont expect it to last even a year, I would use automotive paint such as PPG, but you will need a paint gun, compressor and practice. If done right, the automotive paint should last a good 10 years.
After that, you're done. Good powdercoating usually lasts the life of the wheel, whereas good painting will last about a year at most.
nice and shiny
Maybe someone can hook me up with a couple cans. I want to paint my Hx wheels the same gun metal as that black EK. Im from Florida........n e buddy up for it??????????

BTW I paid about $475US (used GSR rims, tires, and powdercoating) good luck getting rims for that cheap.
That's exactly the color I want C1V1C... do you remember the name or color code of it so I can tell the shop that is doing mine?

Also, how much is this car lowered?? It looks like it has been lowered around 4"
Actually I don't see what's the problem with painting oem wheels. I'm going to paint my Si wheels in a couple weeks so now I guess im ricey now because im painting some oem wheels, Oh well cheaper than buying new wheels.
