Question about universal cigarette lighter replacement installed in 94 accord.
Hi, I just replaced the original cigarette lighter in my 94 accord with a universal (Wal-Mart, believe the manufacturer was "Victor") assembly piece. It came with no instructions, however I managed to figure it out for the most part. My only problem is that when I try plugging in a cell phone charger, I blow my 15 amp fuse under the hood (for cigar lighter/radio). Otherwise the lighter part heats up fine without blowing anything. I looked up some info. online and found a suggestion to remove the "fusuable link" on the back of the cigarette lighter element, which i'm guessing is just a metal washer, and it should solve the problem, however I tried that (or at least what I thought to be correct), and no luck. Is there a short circuit I've somehow created, or another fuse somewhere I should check? Thanks, any help is appreciated.
I replaced the old one because the lighter didn't work (although it did seem to charge my cell phone at the time, guess it's just my luck for the problem to have switched) and it was all corroded inside, so I figured I'd try a cheap replacement. But I'll take your advice on trying something else since the charger for the cell phone has something rattling inside of it. However, I don't know how that would explain that the charger works perfectly fine in my girlfriends car (98 Ford Contour). BTW, I checked all the possible culprits of fuses, and all seemed to test fine. Another guess of mine is that somehow the wire harness on the back of the lighter element is short circuiting since I couldn't seem to fit that stupid plastic casing on the correct way without exposing some of the metal piece which the wire connects out of it. I may just have to revert to using the old lighter assembly, though I messed up the casing pretty good trying to get it out of the console piece
Problem Solved.....All I did was test another cell phone charger and discovered it worked, so the problem did ly within the other charger(possibly a blown internal fuse) and not the car.
