Default difference between Type S and Base

HAHAHA, gotcha, you prolly thought it was some noobie asking what's the difference between the two!

but anyways, I've searched cuz I know better but I've got a question for the Dc5 owners out there.

I'm looking for exhausts and I'm really set on buying the Apexi WS2 exhaust system but I was on crsx.com and I was looking and under the base model selection there were only 4 to choose from and I didn't want any of those, even the greddy Sp2, cuz I took a look at the sound clips on crsx.com and I'm set on the WS2. I don't understand why the Type S has sooooo much more to offer in the way of exhaust systems when I'm pretty sure the Base and S are exactly the same under the chassis. Other than maybe a difference in header or cat, which I don't see why it would be a difference in cats, I wouldn't see why I wouldn't be able to put a Type S fitted Apexi WS2 on there. Can someone refer me to a better link with resonable prices or tell me if there is a major difference or if I can or cannot make this applicable. Thanks a lot guys.

hahaha, I know, I hate when they do that too, I've responded to soo many of those types of people asking what the difference between the two are, and I just either notify a mod or tell them to search.

but yea. I'm glad I'm able to **** at least one person off each day

Actually, yes, there is enough difference in the header & cat so that a catback designed for the Type-S won't bolt right up to a base RSX. The larger tubing on the A2's header also requires larger-radius bends, which extends the completed length of the header. The Type-S downpipe-cat assembly is also larger diameter and longer overall than the base version. Together, it all means that the midpipe for a catback is shorter on the Type-S.

Fortunately, the header & cat from a Type-S will bolt up to the K20A3 just fine. Get a new gasket, and get an A2-specific header-to-block bracket (the same bracket on the A3 won't carry an A2 header).

Here's my experience in bolting a JDM CTR-spec catback onto my EP (I see it as a base RSX with a different body & shifter.. lol) by using a stock Type-S header-to-cat section, no cutting, welding, or adapters needed:

very nice, thanks for the input, you've answered my question exactly, So if I was to just purchase a race header and hi flow cat for a k20a2 and just buy that bracket I'll be all set?

oh, btw, nice Ep3 super clean

Thanks --

Yeah, basically -- use whatever will fit on the Type-S between the block and midpipe. I went with the stock cat because I wanted to stay legal, and the stock header's used price couldn't be beat either. I also bought a new gasket and whatever crush washers that the service manual marked as "replace".

My setup plus the Mugen airbox netted about 20-25 whp, depending on whose stock dyno numbers you'd believe (never dynoed mine while it was stock, so I'm not sure about exact gains).

alright, sounds good.

now would it be a smart move after I purchased the whole system and get my CAI on there to go ahead and get Kpro and expect a better whp gain then just sticking with a stock ECU and letting it recalibrate itself?

KPro will get some more oomph in the midrange and part-throttle, but the stock ECU will adapt just fine. I still don't have Hondata of any kind on my car, but I reset the ECU and gave it a couple months of driving before heading to the dyno. A/F came out great, although i think that's probably due to having an OEM cat.
