GSR countershaft same as ITR ?
The counter shaft gear (and the final drive gear) on my jdm ITR tranny looks like it got in a fist fight with Mike Tyson...
Soooo... I have a perfectly good countershaft inside my gsr tranny... but I don't want to crack it open and scavenge for parts if I don't have to... does anyone know if the GSR countershaft is a direct replacement for the ITR ?
If so... I would likely scavenge both the shaft and the final drive to save money... anyone ?

the shafts are the same, but the gears are diffrent. if you want to keep the same ratio, you need to get a new ITR final drive. OR you can keep the lsd, and switch carrier and use the gsr final drive. but I think that the ITR is a better ratio for that tranny anyway.
ETA: by the gears are diffrent, I mean that the ratio is diffrent.

I might be tying myself up here....
The countershafts are the same ? Meaning my gsr countershaft can go into an ITR tranny ? (as the countershaft's gear is permanently attached ?)
So using both my gsr countershaft and final drive will change the gear ratio ?
Doesn't the GSR and pre 98 type R have the same 4.4 final drive or is there something I'm not understanding ?

the GSR has a diffrent final driveRATIO , it will change the final drive ratio SLIGHTLY. Most people wont believe that, but thats what we learned in school. Basically, you can throw the gsr countershaft in there, and away you go.
Check out this link for final drive ratios.

The GSR and ITR countershafts are interchageable as long as you build them to match the gearing on the main shaft (i.e. each gear must have its match on the countershaft). To change the final drive ratio, you must change both the ring gear and the countershaft. So if you have the 98-01 JDM ITR transmission with the 4.785:1 final drive, you will need to swap both the GSR counter shaft and ring gear resulting in a 4.40:1 final drive.
