motorcycle mileage expectancy
im getting my license next weekend. i know my first bike should be used and not the hottest thing on the block being ill be learning. i found a 1990 honda cbr600f with 22,000 for less then 3 grand.
is there a certain mileage you shouldnt purchase a bike after?

It depends on the motorcycle - if properly maintained, the engines can last a long time (excluding 2strokes, which need to be rebuilt often).
If the outside of the bike looks good, chances are the insides were maintained also. But, find a mechanic or a friend who is experienced to look over the bike for you.

definately have a mechanic(ly inclinded) friend look over the bike for you.
however, pass on the f1. you can get an f2/3 for that much.
edit: you're right up the street. did you take the msf course?

That's way too much money for an f1. I've picked up a 90 hurricane liter for a grand in the past with less mileage

sigh... I'm at 23k on my thooperhawk and biggest thing is some electrical gremlins... it's been taken care of/never dropped but just random wires have shorted...
once it's fixed though it should run for awhile with almost no maintenance... *knock on wood*

vtwins have more miles because most vtwins are more cruiser oriented than I4's. By design, in general they aren't any more durable.
I have 30k miles on my 01 zuke 1200cc I4. Stock motor, stock transmission, etc. It has probably recieved about a grand in maint. in its entire life time and currently needs a rear tire pretty soon and that's it.
I would be WAY more concerned on the condition of the transmission than engine. 99.9% of engine failure on sportbike engines is due to extreme abuse [such as shifting into 1st at 70mph thinking you are at the top of 2nd, or running] or running it out of oil/coolant and letting it gernade.
However, 1 out of every 10 sportbikes on the road probably has some sort of transmission issue, whether minor or not. My transmission doesn't shift like absolutely new I'm sure, but it shifts a lot better than my yzf600r's did at only 10k miles because that was a pos gearbox with fragile aluminum components.
Go buy an F3 if you can, otherwise there are TONS of great bikes like SV's and FJ's that are MUCH newer and MUCH easier to work on for the 3 grand range. I bought my bike for 3 grand on the dot actually.

Price is too high... a friend of mine bought a 2001 (I think) GS500 for $2200, had 4k miles on it. That bike should be $1500, or less if it needs work (tires, chain, etc).
Just for a point of reference, I've got a 96 F3 that I'll be selling this winter for $2600-$2800. Its got 32k on it now, and I'll ride it until then... some mods, fairly new tires, brakes, new chain/sprockets, really needs nothing. Gas and go.
