Default Opinions on modular helmets

I am looking at buying a shoei syncrotec helmet and am just curious what people thought of the modular helmets.

Anyone have them, got any advice. I don't know if I really "need" a modular helmet, but I like the idea.

If I dont go with the modular I would either get another x-11 or rf-1000 from shoei. I just think for the price it would be more convienent.

I am forever a shoei customer after my crash with the x-11. It saved my *** and because of that I will give shoei my money.

i associate modular helmets with touring and sport touring guys. When i see a sport biker wearing one it looks out of place. Like having a fart cannon on your 67 mustang, or a GP spoiler on your minivan. To me, it just doesn't fit.

What are you thinking you need it for? Just want to be able to flip up the face?

I enjoyed my Syncrotec helmet. It was easier to talk to people at, say, a gas station, without having to remove the helmet. Unfortunately, the chin bar touched my chin almost constantly, so that was one negative.

Also, the flipface helmets do not protect as well as the solid helmets. Most are only DOT approved.

Another downside to the Syncrotec is the windnoise - it's really high. The helmet also leaks a little bit when riding in the rain.

For the money spent on a Syncro, I would look into the Schuberth concept, or the CaBerg one (both happen to be higher than just DOT).

haha thats funny

I am wanting to use it more for the convienence of talking to people on the road and at gas stations without taking off the helmet.

Can anyone compare the windnoise to the x-11. I know my x-11 was loud as hell. I wore ear plugs all the time to counter act it.

I am looking to do more of a sport touring thing. Or not, I am probebly going to buy a speed triple so maybe my sport touring ideas will turn right back into straight up sport.

Thats why I will NEVER buy HJC again. My brother was wearing one in the crash I had (he was on the back) and he got a major cuncussion..or how ever you spell that.

I had a shoei and didnt even have a headache.

Again, the windnoise is substantial. It is not so bad in the X11 because it's a lot of air moving through your helmet that causes the windnoise. For the Syncro, there isn't as much venting, but the noise is just as bad.

The convenience of being able to lift the lid to talk was undeniable, but the negatives (IMO) outweighed the pros.

As for doing more touring/sport-touring, I would get a full-face helmet that has less ventilation (like the lower-end Shoeis) which in turn causes less windnoise and turbulence.

Ear plugs are always a great idea. You only get one pair of ears, so don't ruin 'em.

Well it seems like the reasons I want it are not enough to justify getting one. Maybe I will go with the rf-1000

i have both an X-11 and an RF1K, and the noise difference b/w the two is substantial.

the X11 gets a nice little whistle at about 35+mph, the RF1k does not. Of course, the RF is substantially hotter, fogs more, etc, but it's much quieter.

Seems like it would be pretty cool to have more wind in the face when just cruising at low speed and would definitely make communication easier, but its definitely a safety comprimise if you are riding with it open. I say if it fits and you like it, go for it...try it out !
Here is some food for thought on the whole helmet issue: http://www.motorcyclistonline....eview/
Keep in mind that a good fit is the most important issue.

Well the modular helmets are not suposed to be oped while riding. That really takes away the saftey features. All testing is done on these withthe face closed.

As for the RF-1000, is it really that much of a difference with the X-11? I had an X-11 and I never fogged up or got hot in it, but it was really loud. How bad is the RF-1000 compared to the X-11 heat and fog wise?

I just got a helmet, was debtaing between the TZ-R and the RF1000.... all in all, I'm glad (and extremely satisfied) with the RF1000.. Its uber comfy and really gives me the feeling of having my head protected (which is a relative feeling, I suppose.) But nonetheless, it gets

I haven't seen one that is Snell or BSI approved so you wont be able to use it on most tracks. When I first saw it I really wanted one but honestly you arent going to use it that often. Can't go wrong with the x-11 or RF-1000. Great lids, you even get to choose the different size cheek pads with Shoei too when you buy it. Most retailers dont tell you this.

Yeah, thats why I ask here, because I don't think I will get a modular now. It just doesnt seem practical for me.
