What I like to do is wash my car, dry it real well, then go over the car w/ the clay bar. This removes all the junk and crap that won't come off when washing, uncluding paint overspray and various other contaminants that get stuck in your paint. It's almost like shaving your face (or legs for you ladies out there
), but it's on your car's paint instead.
Now I would never use a clay bar unless I could polish and wax the car after that. The clay will probably remove any wax that is on there, so you should use a good wax to give the paint a fresh new layer of protection from the elements.

*Read the directions* yeahhhhh you should always do that anyway.
You can get just a clay bar from Meguiar's, but having used both Mother's and Meguiar's, the Mother's bar is MUCH better, easier to use, easier to knead, etc. The spray that comes with the kit is a quick shine stuff, like Meguiar's Quik Detailer. After you're done with the car you can spray the stuff on the car later on to help keep it clean and shiny. If you decide to use the clay bar again at a later date (it can be used 3 times I think), you can just buy a bottle of the Mequiar's stuff if you can't find the stuff from Mother's. Either brand of spray will work, I guess it comes down to which fragrance you prefer (Meguiar's and Mother's quick shine spray smell very different
).
