Default Building a fighter (56k not so friendly)

Well I got bored after selling my zx6r and got this thing for a good price. I sold off most everything Im not using (still have parts floating around) and bought the new stuff.

Frame: 92 750 katana
Swingarm/rear suspension: 03-04 zx6rr
Front suspension (in the mail): 98-01 R1 forks/rim/brakes, 94 gsxr 750 triple trees
Rearsets: 04 GSXR 1000
Tail: 98-02 R6
Exhaust: 01 R1 carbon fiber can
Upper and sides (debating on full fairing or not): 04 cbr 1000rr

Motor:??? Possibly a new 750 motor, a gsxr1100 motor or a bandit 1200, whatever i have cash for at that point in time.

Everything is going to be repowdercoated and painted when its done.

Started with this:

Then stripped to this:

Oh its naked:

Now we're getting somewhere:

Hmmm:

If anyone is interested ill update as I go. I hope to have the subframe and everything welded up in 3-4 weeks, the front suspension will be on in a couple weeks...motor wont be for awhile im poor

Damn looks sexy already. Remember lightweight is key.

I really like that black front + underside and red tank/tail. I wouldn't get full fairings, but I'd black out the engine and powdercoat the frame and all the exposed black parts black (depending on the condition of it all). ooOoooh.

nice project.
but i say, if youre going to go with a 600rr upper, you have to go full fairing. just because the cbr upper looks incomplete without the lowers.
keep us posted, looks like an awesome project, i may have to do one myself. next summer.

No welding in the bedroom haha, i just have all my stuff in one spot of the house so I dont destroy the whole thing.

Hopefully this weekend my front suspension will be here. The worst part is going to be the motor......so much mooooooooney.

As for the upper I am trying to find the little pieces that go over the vents but cant seem to find them. I guess I will have to go to a dealer and get them.

So far total in the project including the cost of the bike Ive spent $745. I will have a complete rolling chassis for under 900 but then the motor will be around 7-1200 depending on what I find.

yeah it's a honda... why wouldn't you be able to run a liquid cooled one with a radiator in the front?

yea, im sure you could fab up some radiator mounts. it will open up a lot of options for motors, and it'll probably be less costly in the long run.

fitment is a huge issue. There are a few reasons why....Ive been talking it over with people on katriders.com and its just a easier way to go without having to deal with huge issues along the way. Maybe one day if I keep the bike long enough I will look more into it but for now I just want a motor that will bolt in and run.

now I remember why I cant use water cooled motors, they have a downdraft setup on them which means the carbs would hit the gas tank. There is another reason to but I cant think of it at the moment.

The downdraft setup is the big reason though, i cant fit another gas tank on the bike (i would rather not anyway as i like the stock tank style).

wait what? how much room is under the tank? on the vtr1000f the carbs are down low, the airbox on the other hand sticks way up.... I really don't think you're restricted to oil cooled even with this gas tank... doing individual air filters instead of an airbox gets rid of some room too... Could you take a pic of what room there is under the tank?

Basically the bottom edge of the gas tank is the bottom underside of the tank. Ive talked to quite a few people who work only on kats and have done multiple swaps (early gsxr 750's, bandit 1200, gsxr1000's) and they all say the will not fit in the frame and even when you manage to get them in you need all custom motor mounts made. I would rather just stick with what I know will work for now.

was there any mods/fabricating done to get the r6 tail on the katana frame? i was thinking about getting a 90's katana or a gsxr600 but i want to swap out the tails for a better look like you did.
