It's been done plenty of times. You just have to remember the stock housing scatters light pretty bad. That's why people buy those APC projector housings.

i got HID in my EF with stock headlights and they work really good to me and i dont like those headlights with the PROJECTOR lights cause they look ugly but i got the EXSUN HID kit i brought from a friend for 150, 6,000K and 9006 bulb. I had it for about 6 months now and they are perfect and i can see better on the road

If I'm not mistaken, the owner of that car, and an amazing EF builder, is no longer with us...

It's late but I will post anyway.
I wanted hid in my crx, so a few thoughts went around. Apc made clear glass lenses on the usm housings. I was going to take those clear glass lenses on euro h4 housings (like from germany or the uk) to have a single bulb clear lense housing, no cheap *** projector and no fluted lenses.
I then decided that would look too new school for a 89 model car so I just bought denso ballasts, casper shields and d2r 4300k bulbs and called it a day.

casper shields block out half of it so i don't blind oncoming traffic and beam light in useless spots

I prefer just white output, no blue no problem.

The motorized up/down is fun too...who needs dual bi-xenon when you have that.

I have them sitting on a wagon I'm parting out. I'm going to swap them over to my 90 Si. I've been told that the housings should have melted by now but they have seen hours of overnight driving with no problems. Conversion was done by a friend and apparently all the parts came off of ebay.

I *really want to do something with my EG. Those headlights suck! Not as bad as the EK though. I'm just wary of putting any ricey *** angle eye JDM yo housings on my nice stock looking hatch.

what is a casper shield? what rating are your bulbs also b16_madman??? have u had neone tell u that they glare too much? i want hids, i dont really care about having 3x the light, just as longas they are brighter then normal headlights, and i also like the color of them, but dont want to be too much of an annoyance to others driving.

casper shields, ebay it.

I bought my bulbs, ballasts etc from this guy. he includes it all i think
kewl ebay link
They're 4300k blue-ish right at first then just plain nice bright white. sometimes ppl bitch about my lights, but no cops yet & i know it's not blinding. that's the point of the casper shield to block out that lower half so it doesn't aim light up into the sky
