1st gen Engine possibilities...
Hi all...I don't usually post in this forum, but my subject pretains. I have the chance to ditch my car payments (if I can sell my Del Sol) and start a neat little project. My cousin has a 86 CRX that he said I could have flat out for nothing!!! I want to build a frankenstein out of this baby but I need a good setup.
So here's where I need help: what engines will fit in this chassis using very little money on motor mounts. Example: the ZC engine...does it bolt right in, can you use mounts from other cars, or does this require special motor mounts? Also, what is the biggest size engine you've seen in a first gen with out having to modify too much? Thanks ahead of time for all the help guys...

Well, I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe if you want to do any motor swaps that are worth a godamn, or semi easy to install you need to start out with an Si, because the lower trim models are carburated. That said, b series motors will fit, as will ZC's etc etc.
Let's say I put in a ZC, no a/c, no p/s, just the esentials, how much would be invilved in wiring up the car to be fuel injected?
All brown top ZC's will bolt up nicely in a first gen. SOME black top ZC's will as well. HASport has a mount kit for B series engines into a first gen. The USDM 86-87 teg engine will fit as well, as was mentioned.
The swaps from easiest to hardest, and cheapest to most expensive:
D16A1 USDM teg brown top
ZC brown top
ZC black top (with front mounts)
ZC black top (with side mounts)
B series
You can also try the forum on my site, it's 1G specific.
PS I have done the carb to fuelie conversion. It's painful, but not impossible.

Check out the latest Sport Compact Car magazine. They did a story on updating an older first gen CRX. This was an update on the original swap but should be able to buy the issue with this story originally.
The first gen integra engine will fit without too many difficulties- you will need to swap fuel lines, pump, etc for it to run with the stock FI.

If you start with an SI, you do NOT need to upgrade the pump, lines, etc. I know 3 people with either a D16A1 or a brown top ZC (one turbo'ed) with stock CRX SI pump and lines, with no problems.
A DX is another story altogether.

D16A1 out of a 86-87 Integra. It is basically a direct bolt in. I am assuming that the car is an Si. If not you would need to convert from carb to fi. Here is a little more info on the swap: http://hybrid2.honda-perf.org/tech/3gtech.html
Two of you guys have said "D16A1 out of an '86-'97 Integra" so far. Is there anything different about the '88-'89 motors that prevents them from being swapped in?
The 86-87 teg has the same mount points as the 84-87 Civic/CRX, so you use the CRX front mount on the D16 block, and the teg tranny and rear mount. Plus the wiring for the 86-87 teg is the same as the 86/87 CRX SI (not sure about the 85) with a few minor differences, as listed in the page linked above. Read the page linked above, it tells you what you need to do, and the parts you need.
The 88-89 teg is like the 88-91 Civic/CRX, it has electronic advance (the 86-87 uses vacuum), it has a VSS (86-87 uses a cable speedo with no VSS), and a few other things. Plus the mounts are way different. Not to say it can't be done, it can, and I've seen it with my own eyes, but it's not as easy as an 86-87. I should have maybe slotted it into the list above just before 'Black top ZC (side mounts)'

The 88-89 is OBD0 while the 86-87 is pre OBD. Since it is actually a DX and you will need to wire everything up anyway it may not really matter.
You could always use the D16A1 and carb it that would be different.

Thanks for all the responses guys...but I have some more questions. Are there any VTEC head swaps avaliable for the 1.6 ZC engine? IF not, would a b18b fit this 1st gen enginebays? Just wondering, because I don't think I qould want a d16a1 in my car. I'd rather spend more money on mounts. Let me know please.
They did make a SOHC ZC that is very similar to the D16A6. I am not sure if there are 2 versions of the SOHC like there are of the DOHC. If there are you could in theory do a mini-me set up. Not sure if it's possible or what problems you may run into though. There aren't any VTEC heads that fit the DOHC ZC.

well i went into this project hoping to spend little money, but making a crx hx (i think) fuel injected and able to handle any kind of power. I guess I'll just sell my crx.
