Removing accesory belts?
I'm trying to diagnose a problem with a knock on my motor ('00 Si w/B16) and what's the best way to remove the belts so I can try and narrow down where the noise is coming from? Do I need any special tools?
Here is my original thread with a vid/sound clip of the noise.

BTW: Yes, I searched first. tHANKS.

Sounds like your AC idler pulley...they ALWAYS go bad. Take a stethescope or a LONG screw driver and rest it on the 14mm nut on the pulley and listen to the other end....most likely it's that- thats what it sounds like.
Don't need any special tools at all. Does the noise get worse with the AC on??

Stupid question, the AC idler pulley is the pulley that the belt runs off of? I just went out and did it with the AC on and it sounded the same.
I can get another vid/soundclip if necessary with me fluctuating the throttle if that helps at all.

I believe you. Easiest way tho is with a stethescope!
And yes, it's the pulley that tensions the AC belt. Place stethescope/screwdriver on any non-moving parts while the car is running...like the nuts/bolts. Also you may need to remove the rubber grommet covering the t-belt tensioner bolt and listen to that guy too- may be the tensioner. Have you had your cam gears touched lately? I've seen a few cars make a similar noise after the cam gear bolt back out and the cam gear wobbled inside the upper cover. Easiest way is to narrow it down with above methods

OK I went and got my stethoscope from my parent's garage, I did just what you said and I can definately hear it throught the stethoscope but it sounds the same with or w/o the AC on. I have never touched the cam gears. How would remove the belt from the AC pulley to rule that out? BTW, maybe it's different on myh car but my bolt is not 14mm (definately smaller).

it's been awhile since I mseed with a Si AC setup...oh, you got the swingarm type...

easiest was is to remove the PS belt, slide the pump to the side, then get down there, loosen the locknut and untension the belt with the long(should be 8mm head bolt)....slide the AC belt off and then fire up the car and see how it sounds. Sometimes they will make more noise with the AC on, depending on condition of the pulley. A greater load may add noise, but yours is already pretty shot it sounds like
