My seal popped out on the front balancer shaft seal and was throwing oil everywhere. I went to hond and the yo yo there gave me a camshaft seal and since they were closed i went to O'reily and got the correct seal for it. The problem is when I went to press the seal in all it took was being lightly pushed in with my fingers halfway and then pressed in with my hands using a socket. There was no hammering or tapping to drive it in. I'm worried that it's not sitting tightly enough and won't seal when I start the car and pressure is put on it. I do have the seal retainer hopefully the guy at least gave that right part! SO my question is how tight should that seal be in there? Does that sound like it's fitting too loose? Install the seal retainer, thats what they made it for.

actually the root cause for it popping out was excess pressure in your engine. this is often caused by things like excess blowby or FAR more commonly by a bad PCV.

No, there was a bulletin from honda about the balancer shaft seal popping out which is why there is a retainer kit for repairing the problem.

actually seeing as i have worked aroudn hondas for as long as that bulletin has been out i am pretty well versed in what causes **** like that.
the front balance shaft seal jsut ahppens to be theo ne that can pop out ALL the way like that.
the front main cant come out far enough easily since the timing belt lower sprocket and washer is up against it.
th cam seals cant since they have the cam gears aganst the
the rear main seal also tends to sit close to flywheel as well.

99% of the cars i ahve dealt with that had a front balance shaft seal that popped out also have a clogged PCV AND they also had weeping seals on both ends of the crank.

honda came out with the retainer kit because in the case of the front balance shaft seal on ALL H and F series engines the seal does NOT have anything right in front of it. Honda realized that it was needed to prevent catastrophic failure when crankcase pressure got too high for the pushed in seal.

anyway honda issues bulletins but most of the time does not say WHY the problem occurred or any background.

No, it was because the seals were not properly installed from the git-go. If you install a new seal properly it isn't going to come out. The retainer was a cheap way for them to hold the seals in without haveing to pay the techs to replace them.

 

seals like that DONT pop out on their own. it takes pressure on the backside of it to move them.

LOL, why dont the cam seals pop out then?

 

they tend to just weep oil when the PCV is neglected rather than come all the way out.
