Long trip - need advice
I have a 93 Civic LX, 4 door, D15B. with 180k miles. Just recently did the major service. The car has been mostly used for commuting and drives less than 100 miles.
I am planning to do a trip that is 1200 miles long from FL to NY and back. Is it OK to do about 800 - 1000 miles a day. Is there anything I should be concerned about?
Thanks in advance

make sure all fluids are topped off, tires have good inflation. Have tools in the trunk in case with a full size spare. Wash and wax your car.
Make sure you dont fall asleep driving, we wanna hear about your road trip!

That's fine, check all your fluids before you leave, and keep an eye on your temp guage - your block'll be long gone and assfucked before the dummylight pops on to tell you it's overheating. Same goes for the low oil light, so check your oil every now and again.
I usually check for leaks in hoses and boots, looks for cracks in belts, top off fluids (a trip that long, I'd do an oil change before as well). After the oil change and fluid top offs, I drive about 20 miles to make sure I didn't screw anything up. I also tend to run a step higher in octane when far away from home. Maybe I'm jsut paranoid, but it seems the lowest octane has a higher chance of being crap.
The timing belt and other belts have been changed at 180k.
All fluids changed at 180k.
Radiator changed at 181k.
Oil pan gasket changed at 175k.
The car is currently at about 182k and there are no leaks and so that is good.
Will take all your advice, I was just wondering if running for 4 hours , stop for gas/break another 4 hours would cause any problems. No doubt as I go North the temps will drop.
Thanks

The only thing you have to worry about is your oil pump going bad, but I hardly ever hear about that happening to a honda. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by schlit »</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">
Only thing noticed is that you didnt say your waterpump was changed with the Tbelt...that's unusual.
Things I have in my trunk:
Spare coil
Spare ignitor
coolant
sockets/wrenches,knife,zip ties, tire repair kit, electric pump
</TD></TR></TABLE>
I hope he did change the waterpump with the T-belt, would be a waste not to.
schlit is prepared. I always bring a hydraulic jack because to me the spare jack is too slow.

For a long trip it is always good to be "extra" prepared. I would add the following to the list;
$200 extra emergency money (if you can)
Flashlight
Water and snacks (ever been parked in accident traffic for 6 hours ...I have)
change for tolls
Digital camera (never know what you will see on the road)
I did the NE PA to Orlando and back a few times it is not all that bad.
Good luck

I drove 700 miles in one day. Your car will love being run. For some reason, after the trip, my throttle response was way better.

Make sure your oil is changed, and wheels are balanced/aligned.
XM satellite radio was also a great thing to have.
Have fun

The water pump was replaced at 90k during the first timing belt change. At 180k the shop that did the second change felt that the pump need not be replaced. So I went with their advice.

ugh ohh.
the pump isn't necessarily bad when you go in, but the additional tension and break in period of the new belt will likely cause it to fail in the near future.
Not to mention it's a $65 part that requires you to do everything that you just did to replace it seperately. (minimally +$200 labor)
It's one of those parts that you replace since you're in there....
