anyone ever paint their own car? post up results/how to's:
I'm looking into painting my car and its really expensive because of all the labor hours im assuming. so how hard is it to do yourself? i would buy a paint gun and do it in a sealed place where no dust/crap would get onto it. what kinda prep is involved? is something that with some time and patience i could do myself or is it best left to the pros? so like i said any help and pics would be greatly appreciated.
my post wasnt ment to be a smart *** either, if it came off that way lol
really barnes and noble has a book that is very detailed on body work, and paint. ill find mine later and give you the name of it.

no offense taken, just something i shouldve done. anyway ive got a new question.
for those that have painted before, my paint is peeling in some areas (it was painted once before and it was a shitty job), should i take something like aircraft stripper to it to get all the old paint off or just sand it down and go from there?

The prep work is immense. All I did was just strip the paint on my old car. A painter friend of mine did the rest. I did do engine bay and interior also but I wouldn't do it w/o the guidance of someone who does it for a living or is semi experienced. Just my opinion.
Do you have body work to do also? If you're not working on it full time and you're new it will take you a LONG time to get anything accomplished.

painting your car is fun. the fumes are crazy though...so bad for you...anyways...feather out all your 'peeling' paint...and remember always use guidecote after your fill in your dents. that helps make your body super straight.
for all your questions etc.. go to 'www.autobody101.com'

Its very possible to do it in your garage. I would say I have about 100 or more hours in the painting process alone. Prepping and prepping and prepping and sanding and cleaning......Just be ready to shell out some labor for this kind of project. I built my own booth and did everything myself. In the end I have close to $2500 tied up just in the paint job. It could be done cheaper, but why not do it right. Good luck

^^^^actually i sprayed my car using a snap on excalibur....its a good gun if its properly tuned. a friends friend that has painting for years tuned it for me..and man does that make a difference! the fluid tip that i was using was a 1.5mm, which is on the big side when shooting base and clear...but it did the job just fine!
snap on gun= good stuff
