Default WHAT trans in all motor Lude ?

I just wanted to know WHAT trans would be best on an all motor lude. Most of you are saying either M2B4 or M2A4 because they are the shortest geared but itsnt the M2F4 actually shorter ?

4th Gen
F22/S- H23a/Si - H22a/VTEC
--M2L5----M2S4----M2F4
1 - 3.307 - 3.307 - 3.307
2 - 1.810 - 1.857 - 1.950
3 - 1.230 - 1.320 - 1.360
4 - 0.903 - 1.034 - 1.071
5 - 0.705 - 0.812 - 0.870
FD 4.062 - 4.266 - 4.266
*Above info taken from USDM Helms manual.

M2B4 (JDM LSD) M2J5 (JDM) M2A4 (JDM)

1. 3.307 1. 3.307 1. 3.307
2. 1.950 2. 1.810 2. 1.950
3. 1.360 3. 1.269 3. 1.160
4. 1.034 4. 0.966 4. 1.034
5. 0.787 5. 0.787 5. 0.787
FD 4.266 FD 4.062 FD 4.266
*Above info taken from teardown and tooth counts.

Just wanted to know WHAT i should do.

^like i said before.

what you should do is just get a tranny, see how it goes. if you need shorter, install a FD.

honestly its not going to matter that much. as long as you get a vtec tranny. i dunno what the big deal is about.

Shorter = faster.

The advantage of the M2B4 is a factory LSD and better 5th gear for highway cruising, if it matters.

Dont M2F4 and M2B4 have the same final drive ? Would a shorter 5th help or hurt racing (thats if you get to 5th though)?

That would mean higher revs on highway and lower top speed correct ?

Yes. Not that a Prelude really has enough power to make it's gear limited top speed an issue.

If you're a road course guy you might want a short fifth. If you actually drive your car outside of a city, I'd take the JDM 5th in a second.

^hmm good question.

its easier to look at existing cars to see their top speed.

just letting you know..........a '00 corvette's top speed is somewhere around 172mph. and thats a 350hp car.

ppl are always claiming they could go more than 145ish in their preludes.....

but i've yet to see that as a possibility.

i can claim that as true.....i did it once, a very , very long time ago when i was young and dumb.....so yes, you can go 140-150mph in a prelude....

i doubt much faster would be possible, but this was with an h22 and going downhill.....

i've been 132mph

i ran out of 4th shifted into 5th and was at 6700-6800rpms and i could still feel it pulling.....but a curve was up ahead so i had to back off

based on that i always guess that i would run out of gearing before i ran out of power

that was pretty much it.....3am on an empty country road, straight, smoothe, and me not realizing how bad it would be if there were a rock or animal in the road let alone some passing car that late

Yeah, I'm not saying it's impossible to max out a stockish Prelude, there is that video floating around of a Prelude doing 150mph.

It just takes such an incredible length of time that it really isn't that meaningful.

I hit 135 with my H22 on the freeway, but I didn't have enough power in 5th to keep it going.

Yes young and dumb

yes young and dumb...and have done it also, several times. i did it with the m2b4, so i passed 140, the needle hit the bottom of the dash and started bouncing. i estimate 150, and it was still pulling. ive done this more then once, have several witness's, and it didnt take that long to get there! i would not do this anymore, just making a point

to the orignal theard starter, you shouldnt be shifiting into 5th drag racing. the best part of the m2b4 is that its factory lsd, and trust me it works.

I wrote this one of the first posts:

I didnt say strictly drag racing just racing .

im not very experinced with true road racing, even though its what i like most. the only time you'll be in 5th is the long straits, and if u rev the **** out of 4th, ie like you would do for racing anyway, 5th still pulls great. unless this is a strictly race car, the longer 5th will be more usefull over all, then the little extra u get racing in 5th...hell 4th goes to ~120

i've been road racing around texas area. i don't think you would really ever need a 5th gear. unless you had some super powered h22....

anyways, i can only hit 117 mph on my lude for now.......
