Default crank pulley went on vacation

driving down the highway at about 50ish in 5th gear i hear a nasty flapping sound and my batt light comes on the car does not shut off but has no power steering. i pull over and shut the car off. it maintained a perfect idle before i shut it off. i pop the hood and all the acc. belts are off and the crank is like flopping there.

why the hell would the pulley bolt have walked off?? could it affect anything on the bottom end?? i just had my cams installed 2 days ago i thinking the shop may have had somethin to do with it, but i dont think they would have the crank pulley off for any reason. they did timing belt, water pump, tensioner conversion and of course the cams.

i had it towed to local shop to have it repaired nervous about winding it though if i comes off when romping on it im sure it could realy f something up
any input suggestions.....

na it just drives the accessoryes its prob fine but if they did a half *** job puttin the crank pulley on they prob did it all that way or maybe they just forgot to tighten it but it does need to come off for the timing belt replacement and I would charge the shop that first did the swap for tow and labor and parts

damn, they prolly just didnt tighten the bolt down. the pulley does need to come off to get the timing belt on so they prolly just didnt get that bolt tightened.

Bearings would probably go before the crank, but if you didn't run it for long after the pulley came loose you should be OK.

i mean **** if they left a thing such as simple as that loose it makes me wonder what else is loose...or maybe they were just rushing when they buttoned it back up...that bolt goes to somewhere near 180 ft. lbs. if i remember so...if they pussed out on it then thats def the reason why it came loose..but i recommend taking the crank pulley and upper and lower timing covers off just to check it all out to be sure everything else is back together correctly

On the subject of crank pulleys

These are supposed to be well balanced correct? So it you have a damaged one with chips out of it here and there is that going to be hard on your bearings? Being it obviously isn't going to be in balance anymore?

thats what i always thought..mine was smashed up too...almost all of them do because the boneheads in the shipyards slam em in the containers and f them up (taken from my friends dad who runs Japan Direct)..fortunately i got my meats on a good one..and eventually traded for a f20b pulley...(sweet deal for me..b/c some rook in an accord wanted to keep p/s!!!)

yea arent we all...but i think youre fine as long as youve cured this problem promptly...did you make sure the key was still in there????

Worst case scenario would be bearing damage, but if it wan't like this for thousands of miles I wouldn't sweat it

well took a look at it today the bolt is still there so the key probably is as well.

i noticed that the timing belt has ever so slightly begun to walk of the cam gear a bit about a 1/16 of an inch and is rubbing on the upper timing belt cover. is this most likey a result of the crank pulley coming off or something else?? possibly related to manual tensioer swap.??

yeah i actually remembered reading that post before i did the swap. it is walking very slightly but i didnt notice it until after the crank pulley came off. is it possible that it is related to the crank pulley coming off??

doubtful, but possible. If its rubbing the valve cover you definatelly have a problem somewhere.

got the crank pully back on and all the belts back together. threw in a lil bit of loctite for good measure.

after the crank was reinstalled the timing belt lined itself up perfectly after the car was cranked over. drove around for a bit and rechecked the belt everything looks good....

thanks for the help

I had the same issue, but not because the bolt was loose....the crank bolt actually cracked at the top and backed itself out....same thing happened with the battery light and loss of power steering. The timing belt walked and almost came off but one of the belts was actually jammed between the engine bay and the pulley....
