Hey. I recently blew a valve in my 94 Civic DX (D15, 1.5 liter engine), and rather than spend 1200 bucks to get the valve replaced, I'd much rather swap out my engine for a D16 (1.6 liter engine). I know that it is bolt on, but what i'm not sure of is if I will need different engine mounts, or will it swap directly out without any mounts or any surprises (like, I will need to buy something else to get the engine to fit in). So will it need different engine mounts, or anything else? Thanks for the responses.

 

Your DX mounts will work.

 

really? Thanks a lot man. So all I need to do is purchase the D16 engine and nothing else for the swap? I don't want my mechanic trying to pull a fast one on me.

 

you will also need a ECU to control the vtec. you can use your DX tranny but the EX/Si tranny has shorter gearing and it will accelerate faster.

 

Ah, ok. Then it won't be possible, because the ECU costs more money (how much more?) and requires much more labor to install it, resulting in like an extra 1000 bucks I need to shell out for it. Am I incorrect about this?

 

P28 ecu's go for around $125. check the classifieds section here. you also need to add the wires for vtec...

 

How difficult is it to install the ECU for the mechanic? Lots of more labor?

 

do it your damn self. it is located below the glove compartment and to the right. behind the carpet. smack your mechanic if he charges you a $1000 to swap out the ecu.

 

I don't think I'll be doing it myself. Don't want to blow any **** up.

 

A freakin monkey can swap an ECU. Just make sure the car is off.........

 

How do you do it then? Is an ECU just a small box?

pull back the carpet under the glove box
use 10 mm socket to remove nuts from goldish cover.
remove cover
unplug 3 plugs from bottom of ecu
add pins for vtec run wires through firewall(this is complicated, sorta)
plug in vtec ecu,
replace cover,
nuts
you're done genius.

 

What's with all the hatred on this forum? I ask a simple question about how to wire the VTEC through the ECU and people are saying "you're done genius" and "do it your damn self" and **** like that. It's a normal question, one that most people who are not mechanically skilled might ask. Thanks for the responses, but I defintely don't like the attitudes.

Most of the people around here are very high functioning mechanics when it comes to their Honda's. WAYYY too many of us have found ourselves under a car doing something that some moron mechanic said could never be done, and it was easy as pie.

I guess it's kind of like being Dion Sanders - when you can run BACKWARDS as fast as the best wide receivers can run FORWARDS, it's easy to get an attitude. Don't take it as an insult - just persist, and if you don't know how to do it, or can't, let somebody else do it for you. But, if it's a shop - be prepared to be assraped - they don't like doing even the basic stuff we do on this board routinely, and most of them even refuse to lay a wrench on most of our cars.

only if you buy a 92-93 D16z6 or 96+ D16y8. the 94-95 D16z6 used a GSR style upper driver side mount (straight not angled). keep that mind. but if push comes to shove you can just put your d15's block mount onto the d16. everything else is plug and play until you get to wiring as they mentioned above.

 

DX ECU will run the Z6 minus VTEC.

BTW the fuel/timing maps for the D15B7 and Z6 with vtec error codes are the SAME.

 

So what you're saying is that I don't need to enable the VTEC to make the engine work with my car? It will still work without the VTEC enabled?

 

yes, won't have much power above 5500-6000 rpm, but engine will run as a daily driver just fine TILL you get a ECU.
