Default questions about camshafts and valvetrain

ok so i was looking into other things i could potentially do to my rsx without going turbo and i came upon camshafts, valves, and valve springs. i know next to nothing about these and i want to know any information you can give me. crower has a stage 1 camshaft kit which boasts a gain in 35hp over a stock rsx-s without the need to upgrade the valve springs. stage 2 and 3 camshafts require the upgrade of the valve springs (and maybe valves im not sure) and they require a new ecu however they boast a gain of 50 and 60hp respectively. what are the benefits of doing new valves, valve springs, and camshafts. are they really all theyre cracked up to be (by the manufacturer of course).

any information is greatly appreciated, even if it isnt about camshafts, valves, or valve springs. any other engine mod ideas are appreciated. any experience with any of these from anyone? also, could this be a legit do it yourself or would you reccomend taking the car to a mechanic i trust (i know someone whos really good).

a list of the mods on my car is in my sig.

thanks in advance

well dude i would go for crower stage 1, is better plus you could use your stock valve trains, with no problem, you would feel the boost when you install them, stage 2 and 3 are for supercharger and turbo, so if your not going that way and you planning to go all motor just stay on the base of stage 1, plus it would be worthed,, and if you want to get more juice out of those crower cams stage ones i recommed to reflash your ecu, now that is sick!! oh by the way True Story!!

so much misinformation here its ridiculous

No matter what cams u get u will need hondata k-pro, a reflash, or k100
I dunno where u got those power estimates, but they are pretty ridiculous
crower stage 1,2 and 3 are all N/A cams, so i dunno what ur talking about supercharger and turbo...(they do have F.I. cams i believe)

I agree. When i first read that i was hoping he was joking.

Yes the crower stage 1, 2 and 3 are all N/A cams. With the stage one cams u could probally get away without reflashing the ECU but u won't see the same gains. With the stage 2 and 3 u will see increased HP but u will also need to upgrade the valvetrain.

Also 50-60 HP from cams is a little too high of expectation.

Cam shafts are as good as the tuner. Putting a set of cams in is like putting the key in a pad lock that requires both the key and combonation, you need the code(tune) to really open it up. Most stage ones allow you to run on a stock vlave train unless it has been ridden hard then you might wan to look at upgrading.
I know Toda has a kit with springs, cams and ECU upgrade.
You have intake, headers and Exhaust you it shouldn't have a problem breathing unless you go bigger stages.

HP equals cubic dollars. If I where in your shoes I would go ahead and upgrade the whole valve train and have one thing less to worry about later down the road. What happens if you just pop in the camshafts and the springs are good, but you have a faulty valve? You are SOL if and when that valve goes. This is going to come down to what in your gut you are comfortable with. I would personally beef up my valve train before I dropped in Camshafts, then when you are shopping for cams your options are bigger.

Shop around and see what people are using and the kind of power gains they are getting. Other people besides crower make camshafts. Skunk2 and Toda make some good stuff.

And lastly make sure you have dyno tuning easily available to you, it's the only way to see if the motor is really happy.
