Alt not charging battery ! - D16a6 Alternator Wiring to D16y7 Alternator, Need Help!
yes i searched (sorry for length)
OBD 0 w OBD 2 Alternator not charging !!!!!
EDIT: alternator is fine, got it checked at autozone... is it possible to fry wires completely.. i can't see the chances being that big. ?.. i'm stumped
I have a D16y7 in my daily, and i was previously running a D16a6. I'm using all of the A6 parts besides for the Alternator (because i didn't use the A6 Crank Pully)
Basicly OBD0 Harness MPFI with OBD2 Alternator
- New! *(almost) y7/y8 alternator w/about 30k mileage and Y7 harness plug
- New Battery !
My alternator isn't charging my battery, and it seems my battery is slowly losing charge. I thought it was charging at 12.56 volts, but it dropped as i idled the car and hit the throttle a bit. I checked for drains, and so far i haven't found anything.
Here's the Deal
For a while i didn't have the (obd 2) D16y7 Alternator plug, and i had to jimmy rig my alternator with 4 female plugs ..butt plugs..! (yeah i know jimmy rigged)
I got my hands on a new Alternator ( just replaced ) and a new battery. I also got a Y7 harness plug to get rid of the "duck tape sports" feel. So basicly i replaced my alternator thinking it wasn't giving charge, and my battery, because it was a dud anyway.
Can anyone help me figure out what harness Alternator Wires from obd - 0
match up with the obd - 2 D16y7 Alternator Plug wires. !!!..... 4 wires.... maybe i'm running the wrong wires, or managed to mix them up. Its tough finding the wire colors and what they do exactly.
any help is appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ideas... IF its not mixed up wires.. i have no idea why my battery isn't charging
not putting out 14v.... 12.5 at best, i doubt its charging..
Is there a chance the harness wires are bad from using the Butt connectors?
I tried running this today
OBD0 OBD2
HARNESS PLUG
Yellow - White w/Red Stripe
White w/Yellow Stripe - White w/Green Stripe
Black w/Yellow Stripe - Black w/Yellow Stripe
White w/Blue Stripe -White w/Blue Stripe
this is what it was when it was running before i tried changing it today
OBD0 OBD2
HAARNESS PLUG

Black/Yellow - White/Green
White/Blue - Black YEllow

Sorry man, I just posted a similar thread two days ago and I dont think i got one reply!
I've got a new battery (three months old) and I have never actually driven it...because I am constantly working on it to get it ready for the road when I get my new seats.... Anyways, I start it at LEAST 3 times a week and let it run while I'm doing yard work or working on it...and I figured that would help keep the battery charged, but the last time I tried to start it, it would not....it would jump start and run fine....So my question was does the alternator not charge the battery at idle? Anyways, good luck on fixing it!

thanks for the bump ^_^ ........anyone?
gonna work on it again tomorrow.... seems like not many know about this issue, and/or the wiring for Y7/y8 alternator : ( Just found out i could have used the board from the A6 alternator that i just THREW OUT!!!! danit.. and used the origional old style plug ( but i'm not even sure my wiring is the problem)
Drove the car to test a few things, and the battery drained as i drove about two miles to a friends job. I got there and it was at 12.2 v down from about 12.5 (normal charge w/out alternator (14.v).. checked fuses too..
i'm stumped..
To answer your question, the alternator has to be charging the battery at idle. If you test it w/a volt meter it should say 14v + as the belt is moving when you turn the car on. Not sure why it would need a jump after a few days though, unless something is drawing power from teh battery while it sits.
