Default hey guys, question about welding/shaving

hey
im shaving my EG hatch trunk, just the part of the license plate area
gonna have a piece of sheetmetal welded over it, then minimal amount of body filler to smooth it all out, just wondering
should i cut out the license plate area first then weld, or just weld right over, if i do, i hope it wouldnt rust from the inside out if it ever did.
opinions/suggestions/comments/ pics of people who have shaved hatches
thanks!

id suggest not doing it at all. they always crack and look crappy, pluse you wont have the proper setup for your licence plate. just adding more dead weight

well id imagine if done correctly, welded compared to just fiberglass/bondo, and correct amount of body filler, it shouldnt crack or look crappy.
this is mainly a question towards the people who've done it
