Why all the hate on TT cars?
I have a tiptronic 5th gen prelude. When Im in automatic mode (D4) it is kinda slow. As soon as i press the gas from a stand still, it switches to second lol. However when i through it into tip mode its totaly different. I just cant see how a manual would be so much different as far as speed goes. I would love to test my theory out with anyone with a base 5th gen in or around Cary, North Carolina. Has there been any tests as far as tiptronic vs manual 0-60 times or quart mile? I just cant see how it would be so different but im a noob so what do i know.
Thanks

the TT(automoatic) is alot heavier then the manual. I am thinking like a 100LBs or so. thats just a couple more hp. but weight makes a difference in the long run. also manual I believe has differen't gear ratio so it can move quicker I guess you would say.
Im going to have to disagree with you on the weight thing...

gear ratio comparison:
5th gen 5 speed (base)
1- 3.285
2- 1.956
3- 1.344
4- 1.034
5- 0.812
R- 3.000
FD- 4.266
5th gen TT (SS) (base)
1- 2.528
2- 1.427
3- 0.976
4- 0.653
R- 1.863
FD- 4.785
Thats why TT (SS) sux compared to 5 speed.

stock for stock. an SS (or what yall are calling TT, i dunno why, tiptronic is the system used on porsches and other german cars) is a good 1.5 to 2 seconds slower in the quarter mile. sometimes even more. you are losing at least 15 hp (from dynos of SS preludes v. manual ones)
so yeah, SS preludes are great for show cars or if you have someone who can't drive a stick.
but other than that......i don't think so

just out of curiousity. on the same subject... how much loss are you lookin at on an h23 auto? about the same? or is the ss tranny worse? (yes i know autos arent great anyways but my brothers gf has been wanting to know since she doesnt have a 5speed and i do... mwahaha) not that it REALLY matters. vtec owns.

I've heard of people tuning their autos to shift better or something?, I haven't researched it, but I've heard they can be almost as good as manual... So the 60lbs compared to splitsecond perfect shifts ? Iunno, just wondering if that'd be possible, would make it a lot more convenient for me =D

hmm to reply to MadCityLude, the autos weigh less your makn it sound like the 5-speeds weigh less.
to reply to El Mgags7, even if your 4g would "rape" my 98 tt. My car will always look better..... owned
would someone be kind enough to explain to me the gear ratios. Is high or low better? and is it possible like dagle said to tune my auto? If not how much does a manual swap cost?
thx all

auto's lack the ability to launch......thats real racing, not the roll race ***** ****. From a roll, being auto isnt as "big" a factor. But roll races are for people who cant drive......
Maybe if you get a torque converter whose stall is higher, then maybe you would stand a chance. But until then, an auto ludes stall is around 2500 give or take a few which really limits its ability to jump off the line.
In all seriousness, auto trannies can be faster than manual trannies depending its shift speed and stall....but thats an opinion of mine that alot of people prolly don't agree with.

All in all, I enjoy the pleasure of being able to swith into d4 and chomp on a fat burger , talk on my cell phone, or drink my large sprit. Im not realy a racer... all im tryn to do is get my prelude to sound, look, and performe above avrage. It already sounds like a monster. Some of you would call those cars ricers because they look and sound loud but cant go no where. Anyway ty all for the comments. I would love to here more posts on the tunnings of automatic ludes.

i am one of those who will agree with you. but not with the preludes auto tranny. newer trannies are much better nowadays and can perform just as good as manuals. even porsche claims their new auto can make a 0-60 faster in an auto.
and frompa, your lousy excuse for a comeback "mine will always look better" comment was just immature and shows your character. everyone knows they have their own opinion about looks.

well put, and i was kidding frompa, i dont care that your car is slower than mine....looks is all preference, im sure you love your car as much as i love mine
now, as far as the auto vs manual goes, thats a tossup, on high hp turbo supras autos have shown to be faster.....**** even my friend's ls1 camaro vs an comparable auto one has shown that the auto can be faster....i guess it really just depends on the efficiency of the transmission, most autos rob huge power vs manuals.....
OP: the thing you really need to worry about is that these auto transmissions already are weak with a stock motor behind them....get some good hp back there and they will burn out even faster....

I used to have an auto and thought just like you (how can a 5spd be faster)...until I did my tranny swap and found out. Night and day difference! I'll take a 5spd any day of the week.

If this is true, why did it bother you so much? Just voicing my opinion. Its funny how all I had to do was to add a "to me" at the end of that line and he would of said nothing. To El Mgags7 it was a bad attempt at humor that pissed of some people off. Guess it came out the wrong way...Sry

Actually, this has been my entire dilemma since I was in 8th grade and wanted a prelude lol, auto or 5spd.. I knew 5speed would be faster and better in every way, but living in san francisco with a manual is asking for parking accidents on hills. Now about 7 years later, I'M STILL TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE DILEMMA. Here's my solution for now:
If theres a SH for cheap, Ill take it (manual)
If theres a slowlude, I'll take that.

You can't put twin turbochargers on a 4 banger!!!!!!
Oh wait, wrong thread.
If you can figure a way to put in a T400 on a FWD motor, and make 1,000hp, then you're talking. Otherwise, leave the autos for daily driven cars and off the tracks.
